I was so out of touch with PGA last week with the hurricane in Florida situation plus just a lot of other stuff going on. We move on to another week where we should be seeing a bunch of scoring once again with guys able to reach -24 like previous years. I will go and breakdown the course plus all the stats I am looking at plus breaking down each golfer on who I like for both Cash and Gpp lineups. Congrats to Mackenzie Hughes last week pulling out the win at Sanderson Farms in a playoff. I felt like we would see more scoring but that was not the case, and they did make a good number of birdies, but I thought we would surpass the -20 mark. Now let’s get to it!!
Course Preview
This week we move to Las Vegas to go and play at TPC Summerlin for the Shriners Children’s Open. This course is going to be a massive birdie fest and one you will want to take full advantage of. 14 holes here average above a 15% birdie rate. All three par 5’s will need to be taken advantage of because they are very easy and reachable in two by most golfers. TPC Summerlin plays as a 7,255-yard par 71 with four par 3’s, eleven par 4’s, and three par 5’s. While the yardage seems long do not be fooled by the numbers here. The dry desert air will let the ball travel further and also these fairways are pretty wide making it easy to hit it long and straight. The only defense this course has is around the green and not because it is hard to hit the ball it is more of the greens being big so makes chipping a bit harder to do. However, as long as you are hitting the fairways and GIR guys will be putting up some big times scores this week, and I am all here for it. I know I always say I hate birdie fests, but I have a good feeling about this week. I would like to also mention this course underwent some renovations but more of cosmetic features instead of changing the entire layout.
Stats I am looking at
- SG: APP
- BoB gained
- Prox: 100-150
- P4: 400-450
- Fwys Gained
- SG: Par 5
Player Breakdown
Patrick Cantlay (Cash/Gpp)
I am not sure you can call any golfer a super safe play, but Cantlay would be that guy if anybody. Has played here four times and has finishes of 8/2/2/1, so as you can see, he loves this course and tears it up every year. Going to be chalky but 4th in my model with his Bob gained and Par 5 scoring being great.
Sungjae Im (Cash/Gpp)
I will be prioritizing Sungjae over Cantlay in my lineups to save a few hundred bucks and also, I think he can kind of repeats last year and back his win up with a top 5. I am not sure I believe he can win again but anything is possible. 10th in Bob gained, 9th in fwys gained and 3rd in par 5 scoring. Also, on top of that he has great finishes here and at some comp courses.
JooHyung Kim (Gpp)
Price is up but he comes in 1st in my overall model this week. 2nd in Bob gained, 1st in App and 2nd in fwys gained. Also played Wyndham and won over there which is a comp course to here. This should be a good week for him, and we should see him drop some fireworks on this field.
Taylor Montgomery (Cash/Gpp)
I honestly do not think anybody is going to go here this week. A lot of people still see an unknown and also you will not see any good stats coming from him this week. Montgomery is an amazing talent, and I will be playing a ton of him this season. Give me Montgomery this week and I hope he comes in lower owned because I think he top 10s here with upside for more.
Cameron Davis (Cash/Gpp)
Not sure how highly owned he will be this week but honestly, I think he should be owned by a lot more people than I think he actually will. Coming in 6th in my model along with 4th Bob gained and 8th in par 5 scoring. Davis is a guy who can put up a bunch of birdies and can outscore guys just with his birdies. bent is also his bet putting surface and plays the comp courses well.
Tom Hoge (Gpp)
Going to be only a Gpp play this week because he can go out and finish dead last, but he has some good results here. Also, I believe his form is coming back a bit, so I am willing to take a shot on him in Gpps. 9th in my short-term model so I believe we can get a made cut and score well.
Taylor Pendrith (Cash/Gpp)
Good talent who comes in 10th in my model this week. 12th in Bob gained and 5th in par 5 scoring so he will be making plenty of birdies. Best putting surface for him is bent grass and plays much better on easier courses.
J.T Poston (Gpp)
This is for sure a GPP play only this week just due to how he has been playing. Irons and OTT have not been great but when he puts them together, he finishes top 5 at tournaments. I really do not believe anybody will be on him this week.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout (Cash)
Most weeks is safe to make the cut and help you on your way to cash. I do not love him for Gpps but I can see him still finish top 25 and be just fine for you. Bent grass is his best putting surface as well.
Thomas Detry (Cash/Gpp)
Going to make his birdies in bunches but will need to keep the mistakes down this week. I believe we see a great week from him on the back of his par 5 scoring and ability make a bunch of birdies and hit greens at a higher rate.
Adam Hadwin (Gpp)
Only reason I have him here is because of how well he has played at this course. Bent grass is his best surface and a fairly accurate player who will give himself opportunities to score. Hadwin is not long off the tee but being in the desert will help him put it out further.
Taylor Moore (Cash/Gpp)
Good young talent who plays well at easy courses. Coming in 12th in my model along with 7th in Bob Gained and 20th in Par 5 scoring. Worst part about his game is he isn’t the greatest at hitting fairways but these fairways being wider should help him out quite a bit.
Matt Kuchar (Cash/Gpp)
I know its not pretty when you play Kuchar but he fits this course well and also has played nicely at the comp courses with multiple top 10s. Kuchar is a plodder who should hit fairways and greens to give himself opportunities to score well. I don’t think he wins but if he made it to top 10 I would not be shocked.
Mark Hubbard (Cash/Gpp)
Played well last week finishing 5th and also comes in 2nd in my model this week. Irons are great and also has the ability to score with the best of them. Does not have the greatest finishes at this course but he is cheap enough that you do not need a crazy week but one kind of like last week.
Justin Suh (Gpp)
Has not fared well the first two events but he was very good on the Korn Ferry Tour, and I think he will start to figure it out here soon. He is pretty accurate with his driver and also with the irons. This could be the perfect week for him.
Byeong Hun An (Gpp)
If you play him this week just do not even watch golf this week and I truly mean this. The reason I have him listed is because he still is a good ball striker who when he can pull the rest of his game slightly together, he can smash this price tag. Probably a multi lineup type of play.
Stephan Jaeger (Cash/Gpp)
When this man gains with his irons it is usually a good amount of strokes and that is what we like to see. Comes in 7th in my overall modal and also 1st in Bob gained along with 1st in par 5 scoring so he can score this week without a doubt.
Adam Svensson (Cash/Gpp)
Speaking of wanting guys who can smash with their irons, plug in Mr. Svensson. Anytime having good irons is a plus for you cannot overlook Svensson and that is what we will not be doing this week while we ride the wave to a top 10.
Joel Dahmen (Cash/Gpp)
His APP game has been miserable over the last 5 but looking back and he actually is good on approach and is usually a pretty safe golfer. I prefer him in cash games, but I don’t mind taking stabs in Gpps.
Davis Thompson (Gpp)
Has the talent and can make some birdies but he is still kind of an unknown and in his first two tournaments he has a 9th and then a 67th so two opposite sides of the field so far.
Matt Wallace (Gpp)
I always seem to get caught with this guy and get screwed but it seems like he is finding a little something so I will believe in his talent again this week and hope it’s the week he puts it all together. 26th in bob gained and 10th in par 5 scoring for sub $7k is also nice.
James Hahn (Cash/Gpp)
I like this play quite a bit this week, missed the cut here last year but finished 5th the year before and also plays the comp courses well. When he is gaining strokes on approach, he is reaching the 6 strokes gained range which would be awesome here.
Ryan Moore (Gpp)
You thought you were going to get out of seeing his name this week and you will all be mistaken. God awful form but fits this course and comes in 11th in my model this week. Has good finishes here and at the comp courses so of course I will be playing him.
Slate Edge:
