About 16 years ago, I was with my teenage daughters Taylor and Abby at a Borders bookstore in NJ when I noticed an older man wearing a US Army camo jacket. He was scruffy and unkempt and looking at the bargain books. Without missing a beat, I walked my girls over to him and said “I don’t want to bother you. We just want to say how great we think you are and thank you.” He smiled and replied,” Oh wow, I really appreciate that.” He shook our hands and said how nice it was that we stopped to say hello. He was very charming. We walked away smiling, laughing, and feeling good.
Taylor turned to me and said, “Dad, you are the nicest guy in the whole world.” I asked her, “Why do you say that?” She said, “Because you always thank veterans.”
And I said “Veterans? Are you kidding me? That was Bruce Springsteen!”
