BIOGRAPHY

When he isn't glued to the TV every Sunday in the fall, Justin plays drums professionally and drives his daughter to basketball practices. A Jacksonville, FL native, Justin currently resides in Atlanta, GA. Justin grew up idolizing Dan Marino (the Jags hadn't made it to Jax yet) and his appreciation of defensive players started with Zach Thomas, then the '85 Bears. Justin played football (defensive and offensive line) in junior high school before being seduced by the drums (also, after watching some high school kid named Emmitt Smith tear through the high school defenses in his town, he decided maybe he wasn't good enough to make it to the NFL).

As a drummer, Justin tours regularly and has performed with Phoebe Snow, Michael McDonald, Five for Fighting, Earl Klugh, and Mose Allison. He also plays in a few musicians-only fantasy football leagues (with really bad team names like Mick Jaggernaut). In between gigs, you can find him watching tape of defensive players, and generally obsessing about fantasy football, especially IDP.

His strong belief in applying "real football" knowledge to fantasy is what drew him to being a subscriber of FantasyGuru.com in 2011 and a devoted listener to the SiriusXM fantasy football show hosted by John Hansen. Having only missed the fantasy playoffs twice in IDP leagues (and several IDP championships under his belt), Justin discovered a particular knack for winning at IDP fantasy football, which led him to apply for the IDP analyst position at Fantasy Guru in 2015. He’s even been called by Copy Editor Ben Kukainis as the “under-the-radar” MVP of the company! Be sure to follow Varnes on Twitter at @downwithIDP.
