Los Angeles Chargers rookie QB Justin Herbert was selected to be the team’s franchise quarterback, according to head coach Anthony Lynn. When he’ll begin that journey as a starter has yet to be determined. ‘I don’t want to put a timetable on this young man. … Does he need a couple of years? Does he need one year? Maybe he doesn’t need any at all. I don’t know,’ Lynn said. ‘They’re [Herbert and Tyrod Taylor] going to go in and they’re going to compete. The best guy is going to play.’ With the COVID19 shut down, Lynn acknowledges Herbert’s development may be slowed without the on-field piece. ‘I don’t care how smart you are, until you get in there and get those reps, especially with a new offense and maybe doing some things differently than you’ve done in the past, like playing underneath the center, that’s going to be harder if we don’t have camps,’ Lynn added. Lynn noted he thinks Herbert is able to do everything, saying Herbert is mobile, fast and has a strong arm.
