The Top-10 Week Five Injuries You Should Know About
Patriot WR Troy Brown (knee) is listed as questionable
and practiced on Thursday and Friday, but not fully, according to
footballinjuries.com. His status is looking like a
game-time decision for the second straight week.
Cardinal starting RB Thomas Jones (ankle) missed this
third day of practice on Friday and remains a game-time decision
for Sunday. Backup RB Marcel Shipp (knee) is listed as
doubtful, but he did limited work on Friday and his status remains
a game-time decision. Undrafted free agent RB Damien
Anderson was signed off of the practice squad and could start
on Sunday. Shipp was expected to be out, so now there are three
RBs who may carry the ball against the Panthers, making this a
situation to avoid at all costs.
Packer starting WR Terry Glenn (headaches) practiced
all week, including Friday, and was upgraded to probable and is
expected to play on Monday night. According to the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Glenn banged the back of
his head on the turf in the practice on Friday after making a
reception but didn't stay down long and continued to practice.
Backup WR Javon Walker (quad) practiced all week, including
Friday and is expected to play.
Packer starting TE Bubba Franks (knee) didn’t practice
on Thursday or Friday and remains questionable for Monday night.
Backup TEs David Martin (concussion) and Tyrone
Davis are filling in at practice for him. One reason Franks
didn’t practice is because Martin is able to practice, and the
team did not want to risk seeing Franks’ knee swell more. Franks
has missed a lot of practice time, so Saturday’s practice will be
very revealing. If he doesn’t go today, there’s a good chance he
won’t play. Keep in mind the team plays Monday, so a definitive
answer won’t likely be known by tomorrow.
Saint WR Joe Horn (knee) was upgraded to probable after
practicing on Thursday, and he’s expected to start on Sunday and
also practiced on Friday. The injury is related to the one he had
in the preseason. Backup WR Donte Stallworth (hamstring) is
out.
Cardinal WR David Boston (ankle) practiced all week and
is expected to start on Sunday. Boston says he’s fine, but QB
Jake Plummer said this week that he’s clearly not as
explosive this year as he usually is.
Bill starting RB Travis Henry (knee) practiced on
Thursday and Friday, according to footballinjuries.com, and
is expected to start on Sunday.
Jet starting WR Wayne Chrebet (knee) is listed as
doubtful but was ruled out on Friday. Backup WR Santana
Moss (hamstring) practiced Thursday and Friday and will fill
in for him on Sunday.
Panther starting WR Muhsin Muhammad (hamstring) is
listed as doubtful but was ruled out. He was able to run late in
the week. Backup WR Isaac Byrd fills in.
Panther starting TE Wesley Walls (knee) broke a finger
during Thursday’s practice and is now questionable to play on
Sunday, but he did practice on Friday and is expected to start on
Sunday.
The Rest of Week Five’s Injury Updates
Updated Saturday, October 5th
Quarterback Updates:
- Jet QB Vinny Testaverde (shoulder) is able to play, but
he’s the new #2 QB and third-year QB Chad Pennington is now
the starter.
- Panther QB Rodney Peete (knee) has practiced all week
and is expected to start on Sunday.
- Dolphin QB Jay Fiedler (finger) practiced all week and
will start on Sunday.
Running Back Updates:
- Jet RB Curtis Martin (ankle) is listed as probable but
practiced all week and will start on Sunday.
- Steeler backup RB Amos Zereoue (foot) practiced all
week and will serve as the #2 back on Sunday.
- Packer starting FB William Henderson (knee) practiced
on Friday and is expected to play on Monday night.
- Bronco starting FB Mike Anderson (ankle) was limited
all week, and his status for Sunday is a game-time decision.
Wide Receiver Updates:
- Titan starting WR Derrick Mason (shoulder) is expected
to miss 3-4 weeks, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.
Either backup WRs Justin McCareins or Drew Bennett
will start, but the head coach adds that he wants to get a good
look at McCareins.
- Cowboy WR Joey Galloway (finger) practiced all week and
is expected to start on Sunday.
Tight End Updates:
- Raven TE Todd Heap (thigh) practiced all week and is
expected to start on Sunday.
- Bill TE Jay Riemersma (ankle) practiced all week,
including Friday, and is expected to start on Sunday.
- Seahawk starting TE Jerramy Stevens (ankle) is expected
to miss 3-4 weeks. The team is on their bye this week.
- Redskin TE Walter Rasby (knee) is expected to start on
Sunday and didn’t miss a practice all week. That’s good because
he’s a solid blocker.
- Eagle TE Chad Lewis (neck) didn’t miss a practice all
week and is expected to start on Sunday.
- Patriot TE Dan Graham (elbow) has been unable to
practice all week and is not expected to play on Sunday.
Non-Skill and Defensive Player Updates:
- Seahawk starting G Steve Hutchinson (broken leg) had
surgery this past Sunday evening and will miss at least eight
weeks. He’s one of their best offensive linemen, and that loss
could hamper their run blocking. FANTASY IMPACT: Definitely
hurts the Seattle running game.
- Cowboy starting OT Larry Allen (ankle) practiced on
Friday and is expected to start on Sunday. Starting C Andre
Gurode (knee) was downgraded to doubtful and is not expected
to play. Backup OL Matt Lehr fills in. FANTASY
IMPACT: Nothing serious.
- Raider starting OT Lincoln Kennedy (concussion) is
listed as questionable and his status remains a game-time
decision. FANTASY IMPACT: His absence would hurt the Raider
pass protection a little.
- Dolphin starting OT Mark Dixon (ankle) did little this
week and may not play. Head coach Dave Wannstedt said
backup OL Marcus Spriggs will start. Starting CB Patrick
Surtain (knee) practiced all week, including Friday, and is
expected to start on Sunday. FANTASY IMPACT: Surtain back
in the lineup significantly helps their pass defense.
- Bengal starting OT Richmond Webb (pectoral) is out for
the rest of the season. FANTASY IMPACT: He was ineffective
anyway.
- Eagle starting DT Corey Simon (ankle) didn’t practice
all week and won’t play. Backup DT Paul Grasmanis fills in.
FANTASY IMPACT: Definitely hurts Philly’s run defense.
- Titan starting CB Samari Rolle’s hamstring injury isn’t
as bad as first feared, and he did limited work this week. His
status is a game-time decision. Backup CBs Mike Echols and
Dainon Sidney would fill in if he can’t play. FANTASY
IMPACT: If Rolle were out, that would hurt their pass defense
because he’s their best coverage back.
- Bear starting OLB Warrick Holdman (knee) was placed on
season-ending injured reserve. Backup OLB Mike Caldwell
will fill in. The team will be without four starters on defense
(DE Phillip Daniels (ankle), DT Ted Washington
(foot), and CB R.W. McQuarters (knee) on Monday night
against the Packers. FANTASY IMPACT: Obviously, these key
injuries make an excellent Bear defense more vulnerable against
the run and the pass.
- Charger starting OLB Junior Seau (ankle) didn’t
practice on Friday and his status remains a game time decision.
FANTASY IMPACT: He always plays hurt, and he’s usually as
effective as normal.
- Brown starting CB Corey Fuller (knee) was limited on
Friday and his status remains a game-time decision. Starting CB
Daylon McCutcheon (eye) practiced on Friday and is expected
to start on Sunday. FANTASY IMPACT: The Browns have good
depth at CB, but if Fuller is out, that definitely helps the Raven
passing game.
- Ram starting CB Aeneas Williams (toe) was limited all
week, and his status remains a game-time decision. Backup CB
Travis Fisher would start if he can’t play. FANTASY
IMPACT: This should be huge for WR Terrell Owens, as
the Rams don’t have anyone else who can cover him.
- Steeler starting ILB Kendrell Bell (ankle) is not
expected to play and didn’t practice all week. Backup ILB Larry
Foote will fill in again if Bell can’t play as expected.
FANTASY IMPACT: The Steeler defense will obviously be
better with Bell in the lineup.
- Chief S Greg Wesley (shoulder) and S Jason
Belser (thigh) practiced all week, including Friday, and are
expected to start on Sunday. FANTASY IMPACT: Minimal.
- Colt starting S Cory Bird (hamstring) didn’t practice
all week, including Friday, and isn’t expected to play on Sunday.
Backup S Jason Doering is expected to fill in. Starting OLB
Mike Peterson (knee) practiced on Friday and is expected to
start on Sunday. FANTASY IMPACT: Bird’s a young player who
isn’t making a huge difference, but the run defense takes a small
hit without him.
Notable "Outs" This Week
Skill Players:
(QB, Stl, Finger) – Expected to miss 8-10 weeks. FANTASY
IMPACT: At this point, Jamie Martin starting may be
good for this offense. RB Marshall Faulk should see more
carries as well.
- Deshaun Foster
(RB, Car, knee) – Out a minimum of two more
weeks. In fact, it’s possible they could hold him until after the
bye (Week Nine). FANTASY IMPACT: Lamar Smith remains
the man, and the deeper we get into the season, he’s becoming more
and more the man.
(RB, Ten, hip) – Out at least four more
weeks. Backup RBs Mike Green and John Simon are
filling in. FANTASY IMPACT: The Titans may opt to put
Holcombe on IR and Simon has done a nice job. If Eddie
George went down and Holcombe were out of the picture, Simon
would be a viable fantasy option.
(RB, Pit, Rib) - May play
next week. FANTASY IMPACT: Amos Zereoue will be the
clear #2 back and should get more playing time this week. He’d get
the bulk of the carries if Bettis were not on the field.
(FB, Stl, foot) – Backup FB Chris
Hetherington fills in. Still hurts their run blocking.
(WR, Ten, Shoulder) – Out 3-4 weeks. Backup
WRs Justin McCareins and Drew Bennett will fill in.
FANTASY IMPACT: The team wants to get a look at McCareins,
but Bennett will not go away. We’re convinced one of them will
score this week.
(WR, NO, Hamstring) – He’s very
questionable for next week. Backup WR Jake Reed moves up to
fill in. FANTASY IMPACT: This significantly raises WR
Jerome Pathon’s value for at least this week.
(TE, Cin, knee) – Expected to miss 1-2 more
weeks. Backup TE Matt Schobel fills in. FANTASY
IMPACT: More than anything, this hurts their run blocking,
since Brewer is the better blocker.
Non-Skill Players:
- Anthony Clement (OT, Ari, arm) – Out until at least 3-4
more weeks. FANTASY IMPACT: Doesn’t help the running game.
- Mike Goff
(G, Cin, Leg) – His status is week-to-week.
FANTASY IMPACT: Doesn’t help the running game.
- John Welbourn
(G, Phi, foot) – Expected to miss at least
four more weeks. FANTASY IMPACT: Doesn't help the running
game.
- Orlando Pace
(OT, Stl, calf) – He’s expected to miss at
least two more weeks. FANTASY IMPACT: Definitely hurts
their pass protection and also their run blocking.
- Ted Washington
(DT, Chi, foot) – Out at least two more
months. FANTASY IMPACT: Weakens them against the run.
- Vonnie Holliday
(DE, GB, pectoral) – Out at least two
months. FANTASY IMPACT: Hurts their pass rush.
- Jevon Kearse
(DE, Ten, foot) – Out at least four more
weeks. FANTASY IMPACT: Hurts their pass rush.
- Willie Whitehead
(DE, NO, leg) – Probably out next week,
too. FANTASY IMPACT: Makes the Saint pass rush even less
effective, if that were possible.
- Dat Nguyen
(MLB, Dal, wrist) – Out 2-4 more weeks.
FANTASY IMPACT: He would have been useful to stop RB
Tiki Barber this week.
- Jaime Winborn
(OLB, SF, knee) – Out at least four weeks.
FANTASY IMPACT: Can’t help their defense.
- Tommy Polley
(OLB, Stl, groin) – Out at least two more
weeks. FANTASY IMPACT: Can’t help their defense.
- Antuan Edwards
(S, GB, wrist) – Out at least two more
weeks. FANTASY IMPACT: Definitely weakens the Packer pass
defense.
Charles Woodson (CB, Oak, shoulder) – Out 2-4 more weeks.
FANTASY IMPACT: Makes throwing on the Raider much easier.
Quick News & Notes – 10/4/02
According to footballinjuries.com, QB Danny
Wuerffel will start on Sunday. This is not an official
announcement, but it will be.
Because of the struggles of Brown rookie RB William Green
(40 carries, 95 yards), backup RB James Jackson could
see his first carries of the season. "He may get some
opportunities. James has got to be prepared to go in, and he does
(look ready). I don't think he's practiced this hard maybe in a
month as he did today. He had a lot of competition with the
running backs about breaking tackles. It is a shame, he wasn't
healthy all season last year. There's no reservation (about
putting him in)," head coach Butch Davis said this week.
Asked this week about whether or not he should feature RB
Clinton Portis for the rest of the season, Bronco coach
Mike Shanahan said this week that he "thinks that's a fair
question …But I think what we have to do, especially with a young
guy that has fumbled a lot, you just don't want to throw him in
the fire. I think our young guy is getting better and better,"
Shanahan added.
The Buccaneers, who signed former Packer WR Charles Lee
this week, want to get a look at him at some point because he is
familiar with their offense and has more speed than any of their
receivers.
The Bears are reportedly interested in signing backup TE
John Davis to an extension.
Ram K Jeff Wilkins will continue to kick barefooted,
although he’s been struggling. The coaches believe the problem is
with holder Ricky Proehl, who has been spinning the ball.
Viking Update, an independent publication covering the
team, reported on its Web site Friday that Viking owner Red
McCombs has sold the team to Timberwolves owner Glen
Taylor. McCombs denies the story, but it’s clear that he’s
not long for the NFL. In fact, McCombs is reportedly so intent on
selling the team that he’s lowered his asking price from $600
million to $400 million.
With RB Chris Fuamatu Ma-afala hurting, the Steelers
may play rookie RB/FB Verron Haynes in the same backfield
as Amos Zereoue when the team goes with multiple-receiver
sets.
Redskin TE Walter Rasby will finally play this weekend,
but this week he’s expected to only back up Zeron
Flemister, who has been decent. Rasby’s presence will help the
running game, since he’s a good blocker.
Charger K Wade Richey will continue to handle the
kickoff duties and long field goal tries, while K Steve
Christie will handle the short kicks and extra points.
Cowboy rookie CB Derek Ross will continue to start over
CB Duane Hawthorne, who practiced all week.
Jaguar first-round pick DT John Henderson will get his
first start on Sunday against the Eagles.
