Quick Tuesday News & Injury Update

Quick Tuesday News & Injury Update

  • Falcon QB Michael Vick (shoulder) is still very doubtful for this weekend’s game, but he’s not officially ruled out yet. The team doesn’t want to do anything to risk damaging him further, so the possibility is open that he will miss more than one game. Of course, he could even play this week. More will be known later in the week, of course.
  • Patriot WR Troy Brown (knee) is expected back this week against the Packers.
  • Redskin RB Stephen Davis (knee) said his knee was stiff on Monday but that he is confident that he will play Sunday. Davis has said things like that before, and he’s usually right on target.
  • Raider head coach Bill Callahan said Monday that RB Charlie Garner (hamstring) and FB Jon Ritchie (foot) are "very questionable" this week. Also iffy for the Raiders are T Barry Sims (turf toe), and LBs Napoleon Harris (knees) Eric Barton (groin).
  • Brown backup QB Kelly Holcomb will be out at least two weeks. He has not only a hairline fracture in his left leg, but also a strained knee. This is obviously good news for QB Tim Couch, who’ll have at least two games to start without having to look over his shoulder. Couch will definitely be motivated to show the Brown fans that he's the team’s best option.
  • Brown QB Tim Couch (concussion) suffered a mild concussion and is expected to return to practice on Wednesday and start this weekend. Couch did not pull back from his comments on Monday about his displeasure with the Brown fans and said that he’ll view playing in Cleveland as a hostile environment. Here’s hoping Couch makes the Brown fans greatly regret booing their franchise QB.

  • Bronco WR Rod Smith (shoulder) has a minor shoulder separation and is expected to play this weekend.
  • The Panthers are hopeful that WR Muhsin Muhammad (hamstring) will be able to play this week. Muhammad is running in practice this week.
  • Ram QB Jamie Martin (knee) was "a little gimpy" on Monday, according to coach Mike Martz, but he is expected to have fluid drained from his knee and play this weekend.
  • Chief PK Morten Anderson (hamstring) still has strength in his leg and may still kick FGs this week but the team is bringing in some kickers this week as a precaution and possibly to handle the kickoffs. Anderson’s injury is on his non-kicking leg.
  • Redskin QB Danny Wuerffel (shoulder) is out this week and could miss a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, Shane Matthews is healthy and expected to be the #2 QB this week and probably beyond.
  • Dolphin RB Ricky Williams is "sore and beat up," according to head coach Dave Wannstedt. The Dolphins are very cognizant of how they wore Lamar Smith out the last couple of years and will be careful to take things easy with Williams by pacing him in practice and possibly using backup Robert Edwards a little more.
  • 49er WR JJ Stokes (knee) will be listed as questionable this week and has a second-degree knee sprain. More will be known today or tomorrow after the results of his MRI come back.
  • Bronco FB Mike Anderson (ankle) probably could have played this past weekend, but the club decided to hold him out at the risk of his suffering a setback.
  • Panther RB DeShaun Foster still isn’t ready to return, and the fact that the Panthers’ next two games are on turf could be a factor in holding him out.
  • Bill TE Dave Moore suffered a broken left hand Sunday and is questionable for this week’s game. He could play with a cast, but if he does, he’d likely be used mostly for blocking.
  • Raven LB Ray Lewis (shoulder) partially dislocated his left shoulder Sunday and will be listed at best as questionable this week. The team is worried about making the injury worse by playing Lewis, but Lewis says he can play if the soreness lessens.
  • Packer DE Joe Johnson (triceps) will be placed on IR and is lost for the season. This is a big loss to their defense.
  • Bronco RB Clinton Portis was essentially named the starter yesterday by Mike Shanahan. Shanahan said that Portis’ heavy workload last week would be the norm until further notice. "What did he carry it, 20 times?" Shanahan said Monday. "I think we've kind of established something right there that he is going to carry the ball more than the other backs. But he's got to prove that he can do it week in and week out and do the things that we ask our running backs to do. And what I mean by that is he's got to be able to understand the pass protections, he's got to be a receiver," he added.
  • The Falcons have indicated this week that they will continue to give RB TJ Duckett more carries.
  • Raider PK Sebastian Janikowski could be a candidate for a four-game suspension. The league is currently investigating his latest drunk driving arrest, and the Raiders are preparing to look for another kicker.
