Player History report (Just one part of our Weekly Game Center/Previews).

History 101

We’re bringing this feature back due to popular demand. Although we list the history report in the Game Previews, it’s also nice to see which players truly have history for or against them each week. Some readers used to complain that this section was worthless because players, coaches, and roles change, but we’ve tried to limit the history to only recent games (we also disagree with those people). And if you don’t like it, don’t read it.

History for them:

  • Green Bay QB Brett Favre, in 2 games against Detroit last year, averaged 256 yards and 2 TDs per game, with an impressive total of 24 career TDs against them.
  • Viking QB Daunte Culpepper was 22/38 for 236 yards and a passing TD, and he also ran for 54 yards and a rushing TD in Week One of last year against Carolina.
  • Cleveland QB Tim Couch had a very good outing the last time he faced the Titans in Week Sixteen of last year: 20/27 for 336 yards and 3 TDs.
  • Cleveland QBs have definitely demonstrated recent success against the Titan defense. Couch and Kelly Holcomb combined for 242 yards and 2 TDs in the Week Twelve game in ’01 versus Tennessee.
  • Eagle QB Donovan McNabb has 7 TDs (1 rushing) in 4 games against Dallas.
  • Last season, QB Steve McNair was super in Tennessee’s 2 games against the Browns in 2001, with 562 combined yards and 5 passing TDs.
  • Although he had few yards (166), in Week Seven of last year (as a Chicago Bear), Redskin QB Shane Matthews made the most of those yards and threw 3 TD passes versus the 49ers.
  • Jet QB Vinny Testaverde threw 8 TD passes in his last 4 games against the Dolphins. And in Week Eight of ’00, he had a 378-yard, 5-TD game.
  • Drew Bledsoe, as the Patriot QB in Week Five of ’00, had a great game against Denver: 271 yards and 4 TDs.
  • Tennessee RB Eddie George put up fine numbers the last time he faced Cleveland (Week Sixteen of ’01): 150 combined yards and 2 rushing TDs. It also should be noted that in 6 career games against them, George has 13 TDs. If he can play through his current foot problems, he might make history repeat itself.
  • Brown RB Jamel White, too, has been successful versus Tennessee, with a 2-TD game in Week Sixteen last year.
  • Buc RB Mike Alstott had a 2-TD day against the Rams in Week Eleven of last year.
  • Last season in Week Five, Jet RB Curtis Martin chalked up 136 combined yards (16 receiving) with 1 rushing TD.
  • And Jet WR Laveranues Coles has an excellent 3-game, 4-TD history against Miami. In Week Five last year, he had 5 receptions for 77 yards and 2 TDs.
  • WR Kevin Johnson performed well against the Titans in both games last year, scoring 2 TDs in Week Twelve and 1 in Week Sixteen.

  • Titan WR Derrick Mason also found success against the Browns in both games last year. He had a total of 203 receiving yards and 3 TDs in those games.
  • And Titan WR Kevin Dyson accounted for some good yardage last year against the Browns: a total of 202 yards and 1 TD.
  • Over the past 2 years, Ahman Green averaged 111.5 yards per game and has a total of 6 TDs against Green Bay (2 receiving).
  • The last time he faces the Pats (Week Fourteen of ’00), KC TE Tony Gonzalez had 11 catches for 147 yards and 1 TD.

History against them:

  • Tampa Bay QB Brad Johnson in Week Eleven of last season had just 185 yards and 0 TDs.
  • Must have been a bad week for players named Johnson; Keyshawn Johnson had 7 catches for only 57 yards and 0 TDs in that ’01 Week Eleven game against the Rams.
  • Although Miami QB Jay Fielder has 3 career TDs (in 2 years) against the Jets, the bottom line is that he’s never beaten them.
  • Cardinal RB Thomas Jones had 5 carries for only 22 yards in Week Eleven of last year.
  • RB Warrick Dunn, when he was on Tampa Bay in Week Twelve last year, worked hard (21 carries) but he managed to gain just 42 yards against the Bengals.
  • Miami WR Chris Chambers had no success last year against the Jets— a total of 5 catches for just 78 yards in 2 games.
  • And Dolphin WR Oronde Gadsden in 8 career games against NYJ, averaged only 53 yards per game and scored just 1 TD total.
  • Titan TE Frank Wycheck, in 9 career games against the Browns, has never score a TD.
  • New England TE Christian Fauria, when he was on Seattle, faced KC 11 times and scored a lonely 1 TD.
  • In 3 games versus Miami. TE Anthony Becht was hardly there: average of 2.3 receptions per game and a total of 47 yards and 0 TDs.

Good news/Bad news:

If yardage numbers are near and dear to your heart, check out these:

  • Philadelphia RB Duce Staley had 133 combined yards (31 rushing) in Week Ten of last season, but he was unable to score.
  • Dallas RB Troy Hambrick, should he get the ball, might be able to put up some decent yardage numbers. Last year in Week Three, he gained 107 yards on the Philly D in just 10 carries, but no cigar.
  • LaDainian Tomlinson accounted for 147 combined yards (75 rushing, 72 receiving) in Week Eleven of ’01, but he didn’t score.
  • In Week Fifteen last year, Giant WR Amani Toomer had 8 catches for 124 yards, but he didn’t make it into the end zone.
  • The king of this category has got to be Keenan McCardell back when he was on the Jaguars—a long time ago, yes, but the stat is almost unbelievable. He 16 catches for 232 yards, yet he didn’t score.
