Just missed it: Week Seven

Here is another look at the week that was in terms of the “just missed it” plays. Yes, I know a “just missed it” TD is worth 0 points, but I think these notes are worth publishing because I’d want to know if a guy who didn’t do anything for me in a given week at least almost scored, or was in a position to score.

  • Marshawn Lynch had a touchdown taken off the board by review
  • Tate punt return for TD taken off the board by penalty
  • Brandon Browner trips over himself on way to end zone on potential pick-six, Marshawn finishes it off two plays later
  • Palmer leads Ellington a yard too far in end zone on wheel route against LB-man coverage

  • Jacoby Jones had a step for potential long TD pass but Flacco throws it way too short.
  • Derek Moye has a potential long TD pass slip through his fingertips for TD. Did make an acrobatic catch earlier in the game
  • Emmanuel Sanders kickoff return for TD taken off the board, stepped out of bounds.

  • Case Keenum had Garrett Graham wide open deep downfield for potential TD, just overthrew him off of play-action roll to opposite side
  • Graham dives for end zone on run along sideline, marked down at the 1-yard line.
  • Anthony Fasano looked to have crossed the goal line on catch near end zone, ruled down at inch line. He was then tackled inside the 1 on another play.
  • Derrick Johnson nearly had scoop and score TD off of Tamba Hali sack at end of game

  • On a Rob Gronkowski catch, he was tackled at the half-yard line
  • Brandon Bolden stopped short on 1st-and-goal, scores on next play
  • Stephen Hill loses TD on OPI
  • Gronk tries to make a one-handed catch on what would have been a 26-yard TD, but can’t hang on

  • Colin Kaepernick just overthrows Davis for what would have been 25-yard TD
  • Frank Gore stopped at the 1 on 1st and goal, scores on next play

  • Alfred Morris did get handoff on 1st-goal from 5 late in 1st half, only down to 3 (also in on next play)
  • Josh McCown to Earl Bennett TD comes off the board due to illegal formation

  • Doug Martin nearly had a 18-yard TD pass from Glennon on 2nd and 5 from the Atl 18 early in the third quarter. If he could’ve hung on, he may have gotten in. Instead, he got popped, lost the ball and also was injured on the play. The Bucs eventually scored later on the drive.
  • 3rd and 1 at the Atl 8, Mike Glennon had Vincent Jackson in the back corner of the end zone but Jackson couldn’t haul it in against the coverage midway thru 4th.
  • Then 1st and goal, at the Atl 15, Glennon to Jackson in the EZ, fell incomplete plus a 15-yard penalty would’ve nullified it, also midway through 4th.

  • Caleb Sturgis missed a 51-yard FG midway through the 2nd qtr. Had more than enough distance but pushed it right, wind was blowing that way too which hurt him.

  • Rams had a 63-yard TD pass, Sam Bradford to Tavon Austin, called back early in 2nd quarter on a 1st and 10 as a STL O-lineman was called for tripping.
  • Car WR Ted Ginn had a 3rd and 11 catch from the Stl 23 late in the second quarter. It was a buttonhook route where he got past the first down marker and turned to make the catch but had some cushion between he and the defender, turned and ran toward the end zone, looked like he might have crossed the plane of the goal line but ruled down at the 1.
  • Car 2nd & 6 at the 14 of STL midway through third quarter Cam Newton to Steve Smith on a slant route was stopped just shy of the goal line. Car challenged the play but it stood as called.
  • Stl 1st and 10 at own 20, Bradford deep post route to WR Brian Quick, longest pass play of the season for the Rams, 73 yards. But just short of end zone.
  • Stl 3rd and 7 at the CAR 24 mid 4th qtr., Bradford put another throw on the money to Quick who was open in the near corner of the end zone but couldn’t hold on to the throw.

  • Nick Foles had DeSean Jackson deep down right sideline on a 3rd down & 1 at the DAL 42 but Foles’ ball sailed out of bounds.
  • Dal WR Dez Bryant ran a crossing route and the Eagles in zone D lost him as he crossed. Romo delivers the ball in stride and Bryant nearly goes for TD, OB at the 1 on 2nd and 2 from PHI 21 early third.
  • On very next play, 1st and G at the 1, Romo fires for Bryant but low and behind him and he couldn’t grab it. Bryant may have been held by Eagles CB Bradley Fletcher, but no call, he complained however and got the call on the very next play which led to fresh set of downs on goal to go and Phillip Tanner runs in on the ensuing play.
  • Following DeMeco Ryans’ INT of Romo and return of 36 yards late in the 3rd quarter., Foles goes for end zone on 1st and 10 from DAL 30, but SS J. Wilcox came over and tipped it away at the last second.
  • On third play of drive following Ryans’ INT Foles throws to wide open Jason Avant in end zone but threw too low, Avant couldn’t hang on and ball hits ground. Dal thought it had an INT but replay called incomplete pass.
  • Jason Avant targeted in end zone late in 4th qtr by Matt Barkley but Barkley threw a pick, almost as if he didn’t see defender who took a couple of steps back into end zone and made easy pick.

  • Det WR Calvin Johnson on 1st and goal at the Cin 3 late first quarter, had a pass go off his hands out of bounds in the end zone, throw was just a little high. Same drive, 2nd and goal at Cin 3 late first quarter, Stafford overthrew rookie TE Joseph Fauria.
  • Det D nearly had a TD late first quarter as Andy Dalton was sacked and fumbled, DT Ndamukong Suh recovered in the end zone, but an off-sides penalty against the Lions defense eliminated the play.
  • Dal 1st and 10 at CIN 37 early 2nd quarter, Stafford to Calvin Johnson but pass deflected away in double coverage at the one. Johnson had his helmet knocked off on the play too.
  • Dal 1st and 10 at CIN 20, same drive early 2nd quarter, Stafford for Kris Durham in end zone but overthrew him just a bit.
  • Dal 3rd and 6 at CIN 16, Stafford throws to Fauria on post pattern but pass knocked away in the end zone.
  • Det, 1st and 10 at own 37 midway thru 2nd qtr., Stafford throws deep for Johnson, who was behind the defense inside the 10 but overthrew him. Would’ve been an easy 63-yard TD.
  • Det 2nd and 7 at Cin 46 same drive mid to late 2nd quarter, Stafford has Durham behind the D but throws just out of his reach…should’ve been a 46-yard score.
  • Same drive, late 2nd qtr, 2nd and 8 at Cin 17, Stafford has Ryan Broyles open in end zone, again overthrows.
  • Same drive late 2nd qtr for DET, Akers has short FG blocked.
  • Cin 1st and 10 at Det 12, Dalton throws to the end zone for Mohamed Sanu but just out of bounds. He connects with Marvin Jones on the next play for a TD.

  • Jac late 2nd quarter, Chad Henne to Justin Blackmon on slant route to the end zone but couldn’t connect.
  • SD WR Keenan Allen nearly had a TD in waning seconds of 2nd quarter, who made a sliding catch and looked down, but popped up and ran toward end zone and was caught from behind by linebacker Geno Hayes at the five.
  • Same drive, Danny Woodhead gets goal line carry at the five, stopped at the 1, late 2nd qtr.
  • Same drive Allen gets targeted on two separate throws in end zone both draw penalties.
  • Same drive Rivers tries to run with 6 seconds left in first half, comes up short on dive to end zone and time expires, SD gets no points out of drive.
  • 3rd quarter late, Henne for Marcedes Lewis but off his hands in back of end zone.

  • Johnathan Franklin almost had TD catch but overthrown but Rodgers, looked like he threw it off his back foot
  • Travis Benjamin almost had PR for a TD in 4th qtr

  • Colts got a safety on Peyton Manning fumble, but the recovery in the end zone was just inches away from being a Colt TD
  • Darrius Heyward-Bey had long pass roll off his fingertips, would’ve taken it down to the 2 and maybe scored.
  • T.Y. Hilton could have had a 50+ yard TD, but defender just barely got his fingers on it to deflect it out of Hilton’s reach
  • Eric Decker had catch at the pylon called incomplete, resulted in FG instead of TD

  • Eli Manning should’ve been picked off on first possession
  • Manning overthrew Hakeem Nicks on open possession in the end zone, just off his fingertips and he was wide open
  • Jerome Simpson should’ve caught beautifully thrown ball by Freeman for a TD after falling behind 7-17
