Just missed it: Week Six

Here are raw notes from our Week Six tape study on all of the “just missed it” plays from this past week.

  • Packers D had an awesome goal-line stand midway thru 2nd quarter, stopping Rice (3 attempts) and Pierce (1 attempt) on four goal-to-go situations from the 4-yard line and closer.
  • GB PK Mason Crosby missed a 44-yd FG late in 2nd qtr.
  • With 12:54 left in 3rd on 3rd and 4 at BAL 28, GB QB Rodgers threw deep for WR Jordy Nelson on a corner route in the end zone but BAL CB Jimmy Smith intercepted the pass and ruined a potential TD.
  • Rodgers again to Nelson on 1st and 20 at BAL 35, but Lardarius Webb knocked the ball away, preventing a TD.
  • Ravens WR Marlon Brown nearly went 65 yards for a TD taking a short 1st and 10 pass from the BAL 35 over the middle in stride from Flacco. He was forced out of bounds after gaining 59 yards to the GB 6-yard line at 5:58 of the third quarter.
  • On 1st and goal at the GB 6, Ravens WR Tandon Doss takes an over the shoulder pass in left corner of end zone but stepped out of bounds on the next play after Brown’s big gainer with 5:19 left in 3rd.
  • With 4:48 left in 3rd, on 3rd and G at the GB 5, Flacco threw incomplete to Marlon Brown at the goal line and Ravens settle for a FG.
  • On 4th and 21 at BAL 19, Joe Flacco throws to Doss for a 63-yard gain streaking down the middle on a post pattern. Doss’s defender fell down but GB was fortunate to tackle him as the safety came across to cut him off. Next play Dallas Clark scores on a great catch and a great throw by Flacco to pull to BAL within 19-17.
  • 1st and 10 at their own 20 following touchback with 8:14 left in first half, Rams went deep, Sam Bradford for Chris Givens who was behind the defense at the Texans’ 40-yard line but the ball was off his fingertips. Missed out on an 80-yard TD.
  • 3rd and 8 at Rams’ 18, Schaub throws for rookie WR DeAndre Hopkins who was running a route but just led him a bit too much. Hopkins wanted a flag and it looked like he was being held. Texans had to settle for a 35-yard FG on drive by Randy Bullock.
  • On 4th and 5 at the Rams’ 18, TJ Yates threw for DeAndre Hopkins in endzone but short armed it a bit. Hopkins was open and a good throw is a TD. Fortunately for the Texans, an offsides against the Rams kept the drive alive. Unfortunately for the Texans, Yates threw one of his two picks – a pick 6 that went 98 yards the other way for the Rams.
  • Ben Tate got two opportunities on goal to go situations late in game, finally got across on 3rd and goal
  • Alex Smith threw deep for Donnie Avery who got behind the D but overthrew him on a 2nd and 9 play.at the KC 43. Would’ve been a 57 –yard TD with about 5:00 left in game.
  • Bills WR TJ Graham gained 47 yards on a reception, the longest offensive play by a Buffalo player this season on 3rd and 4 from Bills 33. Bengals DBs were able to make up ground as he had to slow for the ball and prevent Graham from going all the way.
  • At beginning of 2nd quarter, Bills RB Fred Jackson had three straight carries on 1st and goal and was stopped on all three. Then on 4th down, QB Lewis rolled out but was unable to throw pass and got sacked. Bills decision cost anyone holding kicker Dan Carpenter 3 points.
  • In 3rd qtr., with about 1:20 left, Bengals K Mike Nugent hits a very short FG from 24 yards, but holding is called on the play, 10-yard penalty and he misses the ensuing kick from 34. Although he did hit the game-winner in OT later.
  • 1st and goal twice in a row, Stafford threw for Calvin Johnson, once drew a pass interference and next was just missed.
  • Brandon Marshall drops pass near goal line on 4th down, potential score
  • Jay Cutler just overthrew Jeffery on deep pass, had a step on the defender

  • Michael Floyd TD comes off the board on OPI
  • Aaron Dobson draws DPI on throw to him in end zone
  • Quick throw to Dobson at GL, but stopped at 1
  • Drew Brees throws high on what would have been an 11-yard TD to Nick Toon
  • Tom Brady had Danny Amendola for an 81-yard TD and put a little too much on it
  • Brady to Kenbrell Thompkins for 32-yard TD, Thompkins can’t handle it while sliding
  • Antonio Brown fakes Cromartie out of his jock but then drops a perfect back-shoulder pass for potential TD.
  • Geno Smith overshoots Hill by 5 yards on deep ball. Hill behind defense by a few yards
  • Emmanuel Sanders had a step on Cromartie again and defensive pass interference bailed him out
  • DeAngelo Hall just tips away a pass to Miles Austin in the end zone
  • Jac could’ve had an INT on each of Denver’s first two drives—couldn’t capitalize
  • Justin Forsett fumbled with a little over 2:00 left in the first half but it went out of bounds
  • Julius Thomas had TD overturned as he juggled the ball when both feet touched down
  • Justin Blackmon couldn’t hang on to potential TD pass late in the game on a Henne scramble
  • WR Darrius Heyward-Bey could’ve laid out for a pass that was overthrown by about 6 inches
  • Andrew Luck executed a solid 2 minute drill at the end of half for Vinatieri FG, but could have been a TD had TE Coby Fleener not dropped 15+ yard pass as he was wide open
  • Trent Richardson drops screen pass from Luck and he had blockers in front of him
  • Bucs D nearly had a TD on a fumble return by Darrelle Revis, who scooped up LeSean McCoy fumble with 10:30 left in 1st qt, but Revis was ruled down by contact and TB got the ball at the Philly 40 as opposed to the defensive TD.
  • Bucs PR Eric Page got taken down by Eagles punter Donnie Jones or he would’ve had a PR TD of nearly 80 yards late in 1st qtr.
  • Mike Glennon started second qtr on 1st and 10 at PHI 24 and threw to the left front corner of the end zone for Vincent Jackson but slightly misfired, just missing out on a TD. However, he hit Jackson on the very next play for a TD on a play action pass as Jackson got down the middle and bounced off a tackle into the end zone.
  • Glennon threw deep for Tiquan Underwood on 2nd and 8 from PHI 49, but Underwood was called for off pass interference but got behind the D and could’ve scored with under 5:00 left in first half.
  • With under 2:00 left in first half, Doug Martin, on 1st and 10 at PHI 25, takes handoff up middle, gains 24 down to the PHI 1-yard line. Showed his acceleration through the hole on this play as he got to the 2nd level of Philly’s D quickly and just blew past defenders. Very next play, Vincent Jackson scores from a yard out on great throw by Glennon.
  • QB Cam Newton should’ve been picked off on his first throw of the game (overthrow)
  • AP fumbled at end of first half but recovered, could’ve really hurt the Vikings mojo
  • Kyle Rudolph couldn’t get both feet in the end zone at the end of the half
