Adding Favre is a play-to-win move

Wow, well the Favre saga has taken yet another turn, hasn’t it?

Feel free to peruse my original post on Favre in Minnesota, but here’s the cliffs notes version:

I’ve heard some people already spinning this thing negatively, but while I don’t strongly disagree, I do disagree.

Right at the top here, let’s make an assumption because my opinion is based on this assumption: let’s assume Favre’s arm is improved from what his arm was late in 2008, and that it will stay improved.

Ok, we’ve made that assumption. We should soon get a feel for how accurate that assumption is.

I never had a lot of confidence in Sage Rosenfels, and even less confidence in Tarvaris Jackson. Rosenfels had some problems picking up the offense in camp, whereas Favre knows the system probably as well as Brad Childress (not including Childress’ own nuances within his own offense, of course)

That’s one check for Favre.

If Favre’s arm is even 90%, his arm’s better than Rosenfels’ arm.

Another check.

Although Favre’s certainly a turnover-prone gunslinger, he’s not nearly as erratic as Rosenfels. There is a difference. Favre rarely gets into prolonged slumps, and while he sometimes creates “WTF moments,” that kind of stuff can make Favre great at times, [...]

Thoughts from Friday and Saturday’s games

Here are some quick thoughts regarding Friday and Saturday’s preseason action.

I’ve been trying to temper enthusiasm (although probably not well) about Jay Cutler, saying it will be an adjustment and they may be a little slow off the mark. That said, he was without his two best weapons in TE Greg Olsen and Matt Forte, and as he even said they really weren’t running anything other than base stuff on offense. So I’m not too concerned. Again, you can likely get him in the 7th or 8th round, and that’s a big part of the appeal.

Really liked what I saw from Dustin Keller, very undervalued.

Laurent Robinson looks like the guy for the Rams while Donnie Avery is out. He has some ability, and can do some stuff downfield. He’s not a bad 5th receiver at all.

As I [...]

14-Team Expert Draft today

Note: Sorry, I accidentally deleted yesterday’s post about surprise rookie WRs. The guys listed were: Louis Murphy (Oak), Brooks Foster (Stl), Mohamed Massaquoi (Cle), Patrick Turner (Mia), and Mike Thomas (Jac).

I have a 14-team expert draft today for Yahoo! Sports, which should be of  interest for those in 14-team leagues. I drew the #2 pick, which is okay I guess. The good news is that I set up a mock draft using our new Draft Guru tool, set up the mock to go by ADP (for the computer picks), and checked it all out. In less than 5 minutes, I did the draft, and I think I have my strategy. Check out the results of my team drafted. Pretty solid for a 14-teamer, and I didn’t even really pay too much attention to what I was doing while testing this.

Here are my first 15 picks:

#2: Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, JAC
#27: Pierre Thomas, RB, NO
#30: Terrell Owens, WR, BUF
#55: Eddie Royal, WR, DEN
#58: Donovan McNabb, QB, PHI
#83: Devin Hester, WR, CHI
#86: Julius Jones, RB, SEA
#111: Derrick Mason, WR, BAL
#114: Michael Bush, RB, OAK
#139: Zach Miller, TE, OAK
#142: Mike Walker, WR, JAC
#167: Greg Camarillo, WR, MIA
#170: Brent Celek, TE, PHI
#195: Rashad Jennings, RB, [...]

Sleeper Rookie WRs

Sorry, I accidentally deleted this  post about surprise rookie WRs. The guys listed were: Louis Murphy (Oak), Brooks Foster (Stl), Mohamed Massaquoi (Cle), Patrick Turner (Mia), and Mike Thomas (Jac).

Yes, I’m a little overwhelmed right now.

Beware of the year of the Buzz Kill

I’m trying to stay positive, and I certainly feel good about the site and the content we’re putting out there, but I just have a feeling that 2009 is going to be the year of the Buzz Kill, and we’ve seen seasons like this before.

And what do I mean when I say Buzz Kill?

Well, last year was quite the opposite of a buzz kill year. There were so many intriguing players in good situations – and many of them came through. This year, I don’t see nearly as many, as I’ve stated ad nauseam.

Here’s a good example: I’ve pegged Pierre Thomas as a HUGE key to my 2009 draft plan. That’s great, right? Well the Saints may still sign Edgerrin James. If they do, that’s a MAJOR buzz kill. A massive Buzz Kill. I love Chris Johnson, but I’m now thinking LenDale White will command more carries this year, so that’s something of a buzz kill. I do still think Johnson is very much worthy of a #1 pick because he’s special. I actually kind of like Jason Campbell as a little sleeper this year, but his OL is a major problem – a buzz kill. I love Michael Bush [...]

  • Position Battle Playing Time for First Full Week of Preseason Action August 13, 2014
We continue to update the position battles around the league, but in this blog, I thought looking at preseason playing time would be interesting. The depth chart doesn’t always tell the whole story and it’s certainly worth noting when players get in the game and who they get to play with, whether it’s with the first-team offense or the backups. If you’re loo […]

  • Poll Result Analysis: RB Sleeper Candidate Targets August 12, 2014
Over the last week, we posted a poll asking you which RB sleeper candidate was at the top of your targets list. The results varied throughout the week and Falcon rookie RB Devonta Freeman led most of the way, but things certainly changed after a full week of preseason games:                           As you can see, the final results put 49er rookie RB Carlo […]
