Expert Mock Draft Today

I’m doing an expert mock draft today for one of the Fanball magazines, available on newsstands this summer. This is a 12-teamer and it’s NOT a PPR league. It’s also a league that gives 6 points per TD pass. It’s a pretty basic setup overall:

Draft: 12 teams, Snake draft, 90 seconds per pick

16 rounds (1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 FLEX, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF, 7 bench)

Scoring: Rush/Rec TD= 6 pts., Pass TD=4 pts., 10 yds rushing/rec.= 1 pt., 25 yds. passing= 1 pt., FG= 3 pts., PAT= 1 pt.

Defense: TD= 6 pts., Sack, INT or FF= 1 pt.

I’ll be posting my picks as I make them, starting at 3pm ET.

1st pick, 7th overall – All the good young RBs were gone, so it was between Jackson and LT, I took LaDainian Tomlinson.

2nd pick – Between Barber and Wayne, and I felt the need to secure a stud WR, so I took Reggie Wayne.

4:00: Sorry, something came up during the draft, so I’ll post all my picks. It’s only a mock, so I didn’t pay a lot of attention to it given what came up here in the office.

5:09: Ok, I’m back and the draft is over. While drafting something came up here in the new office building, so I literally could only run to my computer when the draft site’s “Now it’s your turn” announcement came, so I couldn’t cross players off my cheat sheet and just haphazardly took players.  Still did decently, though.

3rd pick:  I didn’t love the pick, but it’s not a PPR league, so TDs are heavy, I took Ryan Grant.

4th pick: I wanted a younger studly receiver, and Antonio Bryant was the best on the board. He’s still playing for a big contract, so hopefully he stays focused.

5th pick: Little surprised he was still there, so I grabbed Thomas Jones. Not exactly a sexy team, but that was a value.

6th pick: It’s 6 points per TD pass, so the QBs were flying off the board. When I took Jay Cutler, he was easily the best on the board. Even McNabb was gone.

7th pick: I wanted Devin Hester here, but I took a chance he was fall back to me and snapped up the safer Torry Holt, who I like a nice little value this year.

8th pick: Hester was still there, so I had a tough choice: Hester or TE Greg Olsen. I love Olsen, but there were several other good TEs available, so I went with Devin Hester as my #4 WR.

9th pick: Olsen was long gone, but I felt okay taking John Carlson.

10th pick:  My RB corps is ancient, but at least I made it deep when I took Willis McGahee. Certainly worth taking in the 10th round for God’s sake.

11th pick: My boy Mark Clayton was there, so he’s a nice #5 WR.

12th pick: The backup QBs are slim, so I grab Jason Campbell.

13th pick: Top defense on my board, Philadelphia Eagles

14th pick: RB Depth Correll Buckhalter.

15th pick: More RB depth, Tashard Choice.

16th pick: My PK is Garrett Hartley

Starting lineup:

QB: Jay Cutler
RB: LaDainian Tomlinson
RB: Ryan Grant
Flex: Thomas Jones/Devin Hester/Torry Holt
WR: Reggie Wayne
WR: Antonio Bryant
TE: John Carlson
PK: Garrett Hartley
DT: Philadelphia Eagles

Bench: Jason Cambell, Willis McGahee, Correll Buckhalter, Tashard Choice, Mark Clayton

  1. Law Firm says:

Wow! PHI DEF available in the 13th round in an expert draft? Hester is falling to me as a #4 in most mocks, so I agree he’s a good value. For a non-PPR team, I think you have a decent squad.

  2. Stretch says:

I agree. I’m not a big fan of Ryan Grant. He is currently not listed on my cheat sheet. But he could surprise, other than that your squad is solid not great.

  3. John Hansen says:

I’m glad it was only a mock. Good depth, but this team is lacking the juice I usually go for.

  4. Jimmerz says:

Curious, was Knowshon available when you took Grant?

  5. Wax Man says:

John – I know you are high on LT this year, but why would you pass on S. Jackson for LT? To me, they are both in the same tier and I would have to go with youth on that one. St. Louis won’t be great, but Jackson will be the focal point of the team and LT will loose TD’s this year to Sproles.

I’m interested in hearing your reasoning, just in case I am in the same situation later this summer.

  6. JBeau says:

Not an incredibly exciting team. Don’t trust Bryant or Grant. Good depth at RB, and I do think Holt sees a ton of targets.

Wax Man, I would assume he went with LT because he is in a far better offense, with a better QB and weapons around him. Just my guess though.
