FantasyGuru.com Showcase League Results

Last night, our own Dom Korbel hosted our now-annual FantasyGuru.com Magazine “Showcase League.” This league is comprised of the top-11 overall finishers in our 2008 NFL Playoff fantasy contest and one staff member.

Dom is the staff member, and in last year’s inaugural season, he denied the other 11 owners by winning the league, so our readership is officially 0-1 while competing against us.

Dom, of course, had to play again as the defending champ, so he convened last night with our 11 winners from 2008 to conduct the first 14 rounds for this year’s magazine.

Like we do for our magazine expert draft, we require owners to draft a complete starting lineup (1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 RB/WR/TE, 1 TE, 1 PK, and 1 DT. It’s a PPR league. These guys will reconvene in August to finish up the final six rounds.

Here are the rosters and the draft report.

Who do you think has the best team?

Peterson, Coleman, Coughlin, Darling…seem to have the most balanced team at a quick glance.
I like the fact that they have a potential stud at each position….I am a big proponent of having a stud TE. I think Olsen enters that status this year with Cutler at the helm.

Not a fan of taking 2 WRs back to back in the 1st 2 rounds and think Hutchinson’s team is a prime example of why.

Korbel has some nice RBs but thats about it. Cooley isn’t great in that offense, Romo is streaky and his WRs are all #2′s at best.

Picking from the 12 hole is tough, but I think Peterson did a real good job, PPR league he got some good guys. RBs are a little shaky, but I think Benson surprises this year.

Wow! Dom got Slaton in the second round? Nice. Not to mention Jacobs and Turner. I think that left his WR corps a bit sketchy, but I like Vjax a lot this year. If I had to pick one team, it would be Dave Coleman’s. From top to bottom, he’s got the fewest question marks, and some of the better anchors.

I don’t see Dom repeating this year…at first glance I’d put his team in the bottom third. (Sorry, just being honest)

Best team is a tough call. I looked through the rosters and would say that 6-7 could easily win it all depending on a player or two. Here’s my 1 line opinion of each team (for what it’s worth):

Coughlin – great squad, needs Carson Palmer to regain studly status
Darling – only if Ocho Cinco can worth starting on a weekly basis
Anderson – will be tough to beat if any of his WRs can become a true #1
Webb – LJ will either make this a winning squad or just ordinary
Coleman – How soon can Lynch help Gore carry the RB load?
MacEachern – If Antonio Bryant is more than a one year wonder, watch out
Hutchison – If Derrick Ward can be a #1 RB, then he’ll be in the mix

Peterson – Roddy White ahead of Calvin Johnson and Reggie Wayne? Ouch.
Gecsek – WR heavy, RB light
Korbel – WR shortage in a PPR league is tough to overcome
Kutney – A stud at each position, depth is a concern
Rizzuto – Outside of a couple of players, lots of question marks

    Good luck to you all.

At first glance…I have to go with Jared darling…yes DW may lose carries to Jonathon Stewart…but at 2.23 this is not a reach…when DW led many leagues in FPTS last year. The team has two viable QB’s in Warner and Hasselbeck (assuming either stay healthy he’s in good shape). MJD is a solid 1st pick…Shonn Greene could surprise and J Jones is boring…but he’s the starter. At WR..he’s solid with possiblilities of spectacular w/ Boldin (very under-rated), Ocho-talented but an enigma, K Walter and Camarillo solid contributors, with Harvin, perhaps the most upside WR in the draft since he has a better situation than Maclin or Crabtree and more talent (some say) than Hakeem Nicks…and K Winslow at TE…a solid player when healthy who will be relied on in Tampa.

I would rather take Ocho than Palmer as a WR will be easier to replace than a bad QB this year…so its Jared over Coughlin. If one is bad..the other will be bad as well.

Minnesota…a solid Defense, and yes a kicker. He may want to find additional RB depth and perhaps another solid TE to backup Winslow…but really he has to hope Winslow plays most games…since he is better than most receivers at 80% or so I’m told!

DW and MJD need to stay healthy…but MJD is a stud…doesn’t take direct hits..and sharing with J Stewart allows DW to stay on the field more games… JJones is a disappointing backup…but Greene will likely emerge later this season once he proves he can block.

Coleman also has a nice team…I just like the personnel here a bit more. Boldin and MJD could lead their positions at points per game…and so could Warner!

I thought Dom Korbel had a solid draft, although I’m not in love with Vincent Jackson in the 5th, probably because he’s been a disappointment for me in the past; I might have gone with Hines Ward instead.

Rick Coughlin should have a competitive team, especially if he can find a solid backup for Carson Palmer – just in case. I wouldn’t sleep well at night if my QB had to rely on Ocho Cinco for anything.

Air Hutchinson needs Ryan Grant to turn into the back he was two seasons ago, and Beanie Wells needs to stay healthy – but that’s the price one pays for drafting 3 stud pass catchers within the first 4 rounds. We’ll probably see another back or two added in August, and maybe another defense.

  6. austin says:

I like Korbel’s team with 3 #1 rb’s which is tough to beat in a 12 team league. Also did a good job drafting wideouts with a lot of upside in VJax and Roy Williams. Coughlin’s team looks solid but it rides on the production of Mcgahee. If he can nail down the job he will compete with anyone. I think all the teams are competitive. Overall not sure why the huge run on wr’s in the second with so many good running backs on the board, especially when you can start 3 with the flex. I think teams that passes on a top running back will be scrambling late in the year. Seems like the wr’s are deep this year so I would grab one elite guy and load up with high upside guys who’s value took a hit because of an off year or guys who are in a good position to succeed like Anthony Gonzales, Vincent Jackson etc. Overall not a bad draft though guys!

  7. Dom says:

To be honest I am not thrilled with my team at all, I got derailed in the 3rd round whn Bowe went in front of me and he was my pick all the way. After that happen I just could not resist adding Jacobs, after that everything fell apart on me.

I am almost certain this was the first draft in my life I have ever taken 3 straight RBs like that…I may never do it again

  8. JOOCE says:

Yeah, tough to pass on Jacobs in the 3rd, but in a PPR I would have gone Welker there.

  9. mathprof says:

I think that picking #1 can be a boom or bust; Chuck Anderson did a fine job, taking advantage of his subsequent concurrent picks; with the tremendous upside
of AP, Brady, Holmes and D. Jackson I would put my money on this team; I think
    Anderson.

Very interesting approach to defer WR’s in a PPR league until picks 48.49,72,73

What was that “unfortunate” replacement pick of S. Moss instead of any of the four or so receivers that went immediately thereafter?
