Free Agency Tracking (3/2/09)

Here are some more signings, as well as a few stragglers I missed over the weekend.

Jets sign free agent LB Bart Scott – The Jets won a bidding war with the Ravens that netted them the 28 year old veteran Scott, who signed a contract worth $48 million for six years.

Fantasy Analysis – Scott, of course, played for head coach Rex Ryan and new Jet defensive coordinator Mike Pettine in Baltimore last year, and he’s very familiar with Ryan’s scheme and approach on defense. One area of that approach is the defense’s versatility, and Scott will help the Jets create confusion for opposing offenses with his ability to line up at both inside LB spots. He’ll also go a long way in transforming the Jet defense into Ryan’s, which prides itself on being very physical. Scott wasn’t a fantasy factor in 2008, but he had 100+ tackles from 2005-2007. Scott also had 9 ½ sack in 2006, and was a top-20 fantasy LB. He should be productive enough to draft as a #2 LB this year, and he will definitely help the Jet fantasy DT. Keep in mind New York was the 5th best fantasy defense in 2008, and the [...]

More Free Agent Tracking (3/1/09)

The signings and re-signings keep coming, so here are more of my initial reactions to these moves.

Giants sign free agent LB Michael Boley – The former Falcon agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract with $11 million in guaranteed money.

Fantasy Analysis: The Giants had some issues with injuries and depth at LB last year, and they’ve addressed the position well with Boley, still only 26, who has some tangible upside. The athletic, versatile linebacker is expected to start on the weak side, and his speed and pass-rushing ability could really help this defense. Boley was once one of the more promising talents at the position, but he had an off-field issue last May and didn’t play well for new head coach Mike Smith, so Atlanta didn’t make it a priority to bring him back. However, on this stacked defense, he could flourish. This move, as well as the addition of DT Rocky Bernard, bode very well for the Giant’s fantasy defense in 2009.

Giants sign free agent DT Rocky Bernard – The Giants signed the former Seahawk to a four-year deal reportedly for $16 million.

Fantasy Analysis: Although he has a rap sheet, like Boley, this looks like a terrific pickup for [...]

If you follow along over at my Twitter account @FG_Dolan (shameless plug), you’ve probably noticed my undying love for Jordy Nelson, and the fact that I’d happily welcome him onto any of my fantasy teams this year. First of all, he’s madly productive as is: he hauled in 85/1314/8 last year and averaged 16.5 FPG in a PPR league. That was good enough to rank h […]
