29 Rounds of Hell

As you may know from reading this blog, I’m heading on vacation this week, starting tomorrow. This is a big deal since it’s the first time I’ve taken one in July for many, many years. That’s in part because I’ve been busy coaching or watching my oldest son in many baseball tourneys in June and July, but also because I’m usually swimming in work. But this year, I’m going to recharge the batteries by taking a week off with the family. So it’s been a hectic week, as I’ve tried to get as much done as I can knowing I won’t be working (at least too much) until 7/21. I have a ton of personal stuff going on too with some construction on the house, office stuff, etc.

That said, it wasn’t exactly great timing in terms of the CBS Sportline IDP Draft yesterday. As usual, I was forced to do like 17 other things while drafting, which is not advisable. It basically took up my whole afternoon since it was 29 ROUNDS! Yep, 2-9, with IDPs. I literally got to the point at which I would have drafted “anyone” if such a player existed in the site’s draft software. I want to win, of course, so I did the best I could considering my hectic circumstances.

I stuck to my plan of holding off on the IDPs, but I really stretched the limits of that strategy, opting to not take an IDP until the 12th round. I also failed to get much depth at the IDP spots, but I have found that mining gems on the WW are much easier for IDPs, since most people focus on offensive players for each week’s WW deadline. I also had to take a couple of backs in DeAngelo Williams and LaMont Jordan who prompted me to also take Deshaun Foster and Dominic Rhodes as insurance.

I had the 4th pick in the draft, which is a tough spot. I seriously considered Westbrook, Addai, and even Bush this high since it’s a PPR league. I think Addai has very little risk and ZERO risk if healthy, so I was questioning myself with the Gore pick. But I felt I should stick with my own rankings, and I do love Gore and haven’t had a chance to draft him yet, so I pulled the trigger. It’s not as if Gore hasn’t proven to be a great back, and it’s not as if he’s in a poor situation on the upstart 49ers.

I’ve published the whole draft below. I want to also add that I got screwed 3-4 times with guys I wanted going right in front of my.

If I decide not to pop in while on vacation, have a great week and I’ll catch you on 7/23

Looks like an excellent draft to me. I’ve never done IDP so I have no idea about those guys, but the first 9 rounds look rock solid to me. I feel like Brandon Jones might have been a bit of a reach in the 10th round…not that he won’t produce but I’m under the impression that he could have been picked up a round or two later…will have to look at ADP stuff though to check that.

I think DeAngelo Williams might be the key to many successful squads this year. What if he goes Frank Gore on us?? And Jordan is a great third back here.

My guesses on the “near-misses” are Portis and Julius Jones.

  2. PackFan says:

29 Rounds?!? … Holy Crap! How long did this thing take anyway? If we tried this in our league, we’d be drafting into the wee hours of the morning – and that’s with all of us sitting in the same living room.

In several mock drafts that I’ve seen so far, the 2 WRs and RB for the Bears are drafted relatively high, but never Rex Grossman. Wondered who was going to throw them all those TD passes to warrant them going as high as they have. Is Rex a sleeper?

One thing that has been bothering me for awhile … just how good is Michael Turner anyway? If he would have been signed by say, the Packers, Titans or Eagles instead of staying with the Chargers – would he have been picked in the first round of this 12 team draft you just participated in?

I kept reading where the price for signing him was too high – a first and a 3rd rounder. It was said that General Managers thought that was too much to give … however, a lot of these same guys are praised by the ESPN wags during the NFL draft when they move up and down the board, making trades to “get the player they want.”

For example, during this year’s draft … consider these moves:

Raiders & Cardinals: swap 2nd round picks … Raiders receive the Cardinals 4th rounder for doing so.

Bills & Lions: swap 2nd round picks … Lions receive Bill’s 3rd rounder for doing so.

    Chargers & Bears: swap 2nd round picks … Bears receive Chargers’ 2nd, 3rd, & 5th rounders, plus 3rd rounder in 2008.

Cowboys & Eagles: Cowboys trade for the Eagles 1st rounder and select DE Anthony Spencer … Eagles get Cowboys’ 2nd, 3rd and 5th rounders.

So … back to my original question … just how good is Michael Turner? If you make the deal for him, he plays the entire season at 25 years of age … so he’s got a lot of tread left on the tire … and you only have to give up a 3rd rounder … which seems cheap to me after looking at some of these other deals that some of these GMs have put together. Especially for a winning team, who winds up drafting in the later half of the first round. Would they be able to pick up this kind of talent drafting where they do?

All summer I thought perhaps the Packers might be interested in Turner … but Ted Thompson does love his draft picks, and we’ve become the youngest team in the NFL in 2 years. Whether we have a host of good, up & coming players or new warm bodies will probably begin to play out in the next couple of years.

In hindsight … I’m thinking the team that really should have signed Michael Turner is the Philadelphia Eagles. Trading your 1st round pick within your division is sort of like kissing your sister – and liking it. Wouldn’t it be interesting this season if Donovan McNabb gets his bell rung … and it’s Anthony Spencer who does the ringing?

If the Eagles sign Turner … he in one sense becomes their #1 pick, which strengthens their offense and denys the Cowboys a first round talent at defensive end, thus strengthening them and weakening the Cowboys. Westbrook and Turner become a dyanmic duo ala Reggie Bush / Deuce McAllister, while Turner becomes an insurance policy if Westbrook’s chronic knee problems flair up again. The Eagle passing game is helped because defenses must respect the run even more … plus both Westbrook and Turner can catch passes out of the backfield.

So … where might Michael Turner have been selected here in the CBS Sportsline Draft, if he’d have signed with another team instead of staying with the Chargers? How good is this guy anyway? For some reason, it bothers me that he’s still sitting on the bench for the Chargers. Thanks for letting me rant.

You do like Matt Schaub’s value! What is that, the third or fourth draft you’ve taken him so far?

29 rounds with IDPs! Wish I could find a league like that to play in. I like the strategical aspect of it.
