IDP Draft this week

I’m the first to admit that I’m not an expert on IDPs and IDP leagues. However, that hasn’t prevented me from winning probably the top IDP expert league out there, the CBS Sportsline IDP Expert League, two of the last three years (2004 and 2005). I was a competitive team last year and made the playoffs, but in the two years I won the league I absoluely dominated. In 2005, I scored 200 more points than my closest competitor.

Check out my points scored (second and third to last numbers) in 2005 in this league compared to others.

How did I do it? Simple, I didn’t take any IDPs early. While others were taking Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher in the 3rd and 4th round, I was taking Carson Palmer and then I was taking Will Witherspoon in thr 13th round. Urlacher scored 8 more points in 2006 than Witherspoon, so my first strategy is to completely ignore the name guys and anyone who isn’t a great value. Keep in mind when it comes to IDPs, that the player pool is much larger than it is for key skill players like QBs and RBs. At the worst, if you don’t draft an impact player, you can play the matchups using tools such as our IDP Stud and Points Allowed tool to find good weekly starters.

Hopefully, the other owners in the draft today will continue to take these IDPs too early. If so, I’ll be able to focus on the offensive guys the first 6-8 rounds and then load up on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tier IDPs. I’ll post the results tomorrow.
