Magazine Expert Draft Today

I have another expert league draft today, and it’s for our own magazine. This is the 5th year of the league. The first two years I was the top team entering the playoffs. The third year I was ok as the #2 team in points. Last year, I was middle of the pack. So over the last two years, this has been my worst league.

I’ll be tracking my picks here. The draft starts at 1pm ET. I have the 10th pick, which I like because I’ll definitely get two good backs and I won’t have to make a decision on Peyton Manning late in the 2nd round as I typically do in these leagues when drafting at the top of round one.

My plan in this draft is pretty simple, and I’m already convinved it’s THE plan of action this year.

1. Try to hold off on my QB, although Carson Palmer will be tough to pass up with my 4th pick if he’s still there. I also want to make sure I get a very good one who is almost assured to have a good year. Otherwise, I’ll have to wait longer and target Jon Kitna or even longer for Jay Cutler.

2. Resist the temptation to take a TE in the 4th-6th round and target a guy like Vernon Davis.

3. Make sure I get the Bear or Raven defense.

These are the keys to my draft plan this year. We’ll see how I do starting at 1pm ET.

Draft Starts on time at 1pm ET:

Round One
1.02 1. Tomlinson, Ladainian SDC RB Wed May 16 12:32:54 p.m. ET 2007
1.02 2. KFFL Johnson, Larry KCC RB Wed May 16 1:02:14 p.m. ET 2007
1.03 3. Fanball Jackson, Steven STL RB Wed May 16 1:02:23 p.m. ET 2007
1.04 4. CBS Gore, Frank SFO RB Wed May 16 1:02:38 p.m. ET 2007
1.05 5. Addai, Joseph IND RB Wed May 16 1:03:08 p.m. ET 2007
1.06 6. Fantasy Index Bush, Reggie NOS RB Wed May 16 1:03:39 p.m. ET 2007
1.07 7. The Huddle Alexander, Shaun SEA RB Wed May 16 1:03:39 p.m. ET 2007
1.08 8. Westbrook, Brian PHI RB Wed May 16 1:04:56 p.m. ET 2007
1.09 9. Yahoo! Sports Maroney, Laurence NEP RB Wed May 16 1:05:31 p.m. ET 2007
1.10 10. Henry, Travis DEN RB Wed May 16 1:06:01 p.m. ET 2007
1.11 11. Fantasy Sports Magazine Parker, Willie PIT RB Wed May 16 1:06:11 p.m. ET 2007
1.12 12. Foxsports Johnson, Rudi CIN RB

I was happy enough to land Henry here at 10th overall. I’m 95% convinced he will be very good in Denver and very productive for fantasy.

Round Two
2.01 13. Foxsports Manning, Peyton IND QB Wed May 16 1:06:52 p.m. ET 2007
2.02 14. Fantasy Sports Magazine McGahee, Willis BAL RB Wed May 16 1:06:59 p.m. ET 2007
2.03 15. Brown, Ronnie MIA RB Wed May 16 1:08:05 p.m. ET 2007
2.04 16. Yahoo! Sports Jones-Drew, Maurice JAC RB Wed May 16 1:09:17 p.m. ET 2007
2.05 17. Portis, Clinton WAS RB Wed May 16 1:09:59 p.m. ET 2007
2.06 18. The Huddle Jacobs, Brandon NYG RB Wed May 16 1:11:05 p.m. ET 2007
2.07 19. Fantasy Index James, Edgerrin ARI RB Wed May 16 1:11:36 p.m. ET 2007
2.08 20. Johnson, Chad CIN WR Wed May 16 1:12:03 p.m. ET 2007
2.09 21. CBS Holt, Torry STL WR Wed May 16 1:13:04 p.m. ET 2007
2.10 22. Fanball Harrison, Marvin IND WR Wed May 16 1:13:54 p.m. ET 2007
2.11 23. KFFL McAllister, Deuce NOS RB Wed May 16 1:14:30 p.m. ET 2007
2.12 24. Thomas Smith, Steve CAR WR Wed May 16 1:14:46 p.m. ET 2007

To me it came down to Brown vs. Portis. Portis was temping, but I’m concerned with injuries and Ladell Betts playing a little more than your average backup. Brown’s Dolphins have issues, but he will be THE guy, and he’ll catch passes and score short TDs. I was bummed I didn’t get Reggie Bush with one of my first two picks, but I’ll take Henry and Brown as a solid 1-2 punch.

Round Three
3.01 25. Thomas Benson, Cedric CHI RB Wed May 16 1:16:21 p.m. ET 2007
3.02 26. KFFL Jones, Thomas NYJ RB Wed May 16 1:16:54 p.m. ET 2007

3.10 34. Johnson, Andre HOU WR Wed May 16 1:21:46 p.m. ET 2007
3.11 35. Fantasy Sports Magazine Williams, Carnell TBB RB Wed May 16 1:22:05 p.m. ET 2007
3.12 36. Foxsports Lewis, Jamal CLE RB Wed May 16 1:22:27 p.m. ET 2007

Very happy to get the chance to take Johnson, who caught 100+ passes last year, in this PPR league. I don’t see Matt Schaub hurting him this year and in fact I think he helps Johnson. My WRs have been bad in this league, so I smell a tough call coming with my next pick and QB Carson Palmer.
Round Four
4.01 37. Foxsports Moss, Randy NEP WR Wed May 16 1:23:03 p.m. ET 2007
4.02 38. Fantasy Sports Magazine Walker, Javon DEN WR Wed May 16 1:23:59 p.m. ET 2007

4.09 45. CBS Gates, Antonio SDC TE Wed May 16 1:29:52 p.m. ET 2007
4.10 46. Fanball Williams, DeAngelo CAR RB Wed May 16 1:31:09 p.m. ET 2007
4.11 47. KFFL Taylor, Fred JAC RB Wed May 16 1:31:50 p.m. ET 2007
4.12 48. Thomas Palmer, Carson CIN QB Wed May 16 1:32:47 p.m. ET 2007

As expected, I had the tough choice on Palmer, and it was a BRUTAL one. I almost took Palmer here and he was VERY hard to pass up, but my WRs in this league have been such skank, and I know I can still get a good QB — or Jon Kitna much later. I think this was the way to go. I was also struggling between TJH, Driver, and Colston. Driver is so productive, but he just doesn’t excite me, and I worry about TJH’s injury. So I gambled that Colston is the real deal.
Round Five
5.01 49. Thomas Ward, Hines PIT WR Wed May 16 1:35:28 p.m. ET 2007
5.02 50. KFFL Brady, Tom NEP QB Wed May 16 1:35:44 p.m. ET 2007

5.12 60. Foxsports Glenn, Terry DAL WR Wed May 16 1:44:26 p.m. ET 2007

Yeah, I have a man-crush on Reggie Brown, I know. But my WRs have been so bad in this league and now I have 3 solid #1 NFL wideouts. Brown should be more active this year with Stallworth gone, and you can’t go wrong investing heavily in this Eagle offense.

Round Six
6.01 61. Foxsports Norwood, Jerious ATL RB Wed May 16 1:45:23 p.m. ET 2007
6.02 62. Fantasy Sports Magazine McNabb, Donovan PHI QB Wed May 16 1:45:31 p.m. ET 2007

6.12 72. Thomas Jones, Julius DAL RB Wed May 16 1:54:07 p.m. ET 2007

I obviously needed a #3 back and while there were a lot of guys similar to Taylor, I took the Viking. This was good enough value, I felt, while there isn’t much upside. Of course, if Adrian Peterson’s injury history pops up, then Taylor will be a very good value. I’m not in love with this pick, but taking a 3rd RB had to be done.

Round Seven
7.01 73. Thomas Bears, Chicago CHI Def Wed May 16 1:54:37 p.m. ET 2007

7.10 82. Jackson, Brandon GBP RB Wed May 16 2:03:22 p.m. ET 2007
7.11 83. Fantasy Sports Magazine Shockey, Jeremy NYG TE Wed May 16 2:03:27 p.m. ET 2007
7.12 84. Foxsports Jackson, Vincent SDC WR Wed May 16 2:03:36 p.m. ET 2007

Time to take a chance, and a 7th round pick can’t be considered too big of one. I don’t think the Packers viewed Vernand Morency as a feature back when they traded for him, and the drafting of Jackson speaks to that. At worst, Jackson will be a very active member of a committee, and they love how he can catch the ball.

Round Eight
8.01 85. Foxsports Holmes, Santonio PIT WR Wed May 16 2:05:29 p.m. ET 2007

8.12 96. Thomas Witten, Jason DAL TE Wed May 16 2:14:22 p.m. ET 2007

I just had to take a chance here. I’ve spoken with two Brown beat writers this week and both say all signs point to Winslow being ready to play Week One. There’s a small chance the microfracture surgery will give him back some of his explosiveness. Even if it doesn’t this is a steal this late in the PPR league as long as long as he’s on the field. I’m praying a certain QB is still on the board when it comes back to me.

9.12 108. Foxsports Bell, Mike DEN RB Wed May 16 2:24:59 p.m. ET 2007

Boy am I pissed right now. Jay Cutler would have made this draft for me but some a-hole named Adam Caplan took him right in front of me. I knew it was coming, though, and I called it in the office once I realized he hadn’t taken a QB yet and was picking right in front of me. Adam and I do a lot of work together, and we both love Cutler. I knew it was coming. I literally couldn’t find another strong pick, so I disgustingly took Leinart.

10.12 120. Thomas Vinatieri, Adam IND PK Wed May 16 2:37:09 p.m. ET 2007

Maybe I’m pissed and looking to screw someone, but no one can argue with Michael Turner’s potential. I’m not going to close the door on a pre-season or even an in-season trade, either.

I need to catch lightening in a jar, and I give Schaub a decent chance, although Alex Smith might have been as good or better a choice. I just have a lot of faith in Schaub and Gary Kubiak and not as much in Smith w/o Norv Turner.

13.12 156. Foxsports Akers, David PHI PK Wed May 16 3:07:29 p.m. ET 2007

There are only 2 rounds left (we do the final 6 rounds in August), and the rules are you have to draft a starting lineup for the magazine, so I had to take a PK and DT. I thought I’d be able to get Lorenzo Booker in the August draft, or Mike Bell for that matter who went a little while earlier. I felt Rackers was the best on the board on an improved Cardinal team and one season removed from monster numbers.

No Sh*t, Mosi, took the 49ers before seeing your post. Everyone knows I’m perfectly willing to overpay for the Bears or maybe even the Ravens, but after that it’s all about upside and all about waiting until the bitter end.
Final Thoughts
I may never get over the buzzkill of missing out on Cutler, and I may seriously regret not taking my boy Carson Palmer, who I took in a comparable spot in the 4th in my first expert league of the year. But I do have a good team and a lot of good players. I would call this team a strong contender, but not neccesarily the team to beat. It could have been better, could have been worse. I guess the one lesson I learned it it’s dangerous when you’re assuming you can get a QB who you covet any time after the 5th round. I say, you better make it a point to take a Brady, Palmer, Brees, Bulger, or McNabb any time after the 3rd round. And if you miss out on one of them, you should probably overpay a little for Kitna (say 7th round) or Cutler (say 9th, although he might be going all over the map this year). I know Leinart is comparale to Cutler on paper, but I think Cutler has a much better chance to go down as a great value whereas Leinart will likely be viewed as a guy who produces about to his draft position.

Projected starting lineup (PPR league)

Matt Leinart
Travis Henry
Ronnie Brown
Chester Taylor
Andre Johnson
Marques Colston
Reggie Brown
Kellen Winslow
Neil Rackers
49er Defense
Matt Schaub
Brandon Jackson
Michael Turner
Derrick Mason

We have 6 more rounds to go and will pick this draft up in August. For now, I’ll give it a solid 7 1/2 out of 10, might have been an 8 1/2 with Cutler.

Why is it that I almost never see you pick late in a draft, or am I way off here? It always seem like you get the 2nd, 3rd or 4th pick. Either way, cheers to you, my man. As for your DEF strategy, I’m not banking on either DEF (the Bears and Ravens) to be as strong as last year. I’d be happy to grab the Chargers or even the Pats DEF this year. I’ve drafted Bulger two years straight now, and he’s served me well. So if he’s there late, I’d grab him and be content. Good luck, can’t wait to see what transpires.

I’m drafting 10th in this draft.

  3. winit4mosi says:

    Sorry John,

I misread the part about Carson Palmer with the 4th pick. I’m running on about 4hrs sleep. My bad. Good picks thus far with Henry and Brown. The Henry pick worries me a bit with Broncos turnstile approach, but he should start and thrive in the system. Grabbing Booker late would be a good idea as insurance for Brown.

  4. Baron says:

Passing on Portis and taking AJ in PPR format both were wise moves in my opinion. I just don’t feel comfortable with Henry and Brown as your starters yet. But both have upside for sure. Can’t wait for 4th…

  5. winit4mosi says:

Ouch! Passed on Palmer for Colston? I don’t know, man. I hope you can still get Bulger or maybe Kitna late. Is it fair to assume there are no turnover penalties for QBs in this league?

  6. winit4mosi says:

So far I like Fanball’s squad, but question taking a WR in the second round.

  7. Baron says:

WOW, AJ and Colston! That’s 2 of the best WR’s for PPR.

  8. Baron says:

Bulger, Brady, Brees, Palmer… all gone within the last 7 picks. Hmmm…

  9. John Hansen says:

Yeah, I got hosed on QB. Time to turn to Plan D.

  10. winit4mosi says:

Philip Rivers,or even taking a chance on McNabb at this point might be worth the risk. The quality drops ff considerably now. I smell Kitna.

  11. winit4mosi says:

    Bye, bye, Kitna. Go Rivers!!!!!

  12. Baron says:

J.Jones in round 6 could be a real steal!

  13. winit4mosi says:

Love the Brandon Jackson pick!!! If you’re going to take a chance, why not gamble on a big one. I just suggested BJax to someone in a Dynasty league. Nice pick ,John.

  14. winit4mosi says:

I smell Jay Cutler as John’s next pick.

  15. Flizzo says:

A late flyer on Jason Campbell?

  16. winit4mosi says:

Nothing wrong with Leinart, although I still think the running game will take center stage in Arizona. No love for Rivers, eh? Hmmmmmmmmm……

  17. Baron says:

Well, there’s just as much upside with Leinart as with Cutler. I only hope the line can protect him this season. If they do, he will do just fine as your starter. As of now, the 4th round pick could be the vital pick of your draft – you could have picked Palmer.

  18. Flizzo says:

At a glance I like “Thomas” and footballinjuries the best. I like the Chester Taylor pick a lot. Very solid RB and WR corps, Hansen.

  19. John Hansen says:

“Thomas” is the subscriber who won our playoff content this year. He clearly knows what’s he’s doing. Damn, his draft just smells like

  20. winit4mosi says:

I wonder what DEF will go next……

  21. Flizzo says:

    Late looks:
    Brandon Jones
    Chargers D
    Michael Turner
    Devery Henderson
    Welker (PPR)
    Furrey (PPR)
    Mike Bell for the handcuff

  22. winit4mosi says:

Nice pick with Schaub, John. I figured the Pats DEF and SD would go next. Man, this is a compelling draft! (munches popcorn).

  23. winit4mosi says:

What are the odds John picks up a sleeper DEF like SF?

  24. Flizzo says:

    Friggin Thomas…haha.

And there went Turner! Nothing like opening multiple tabs in Firefox to view FGuru rankings vs. who’s left in the draft. I like the pick a lot, and I like the Schaub pick too…but if the Chargers D had dropped one more slot you could have packaged them with a late Alex Smith or J Campbell pick (‘skins fan :).

  25. Flizzo says:

Thanks for posting the draft. I’m feenin’ for this stuff and there ain’t much going around. is THE BEST!!!

  26. winit4mosi says:

Love the Niners pick, John. If you’re drafting IDPs this year, take a flyer on Patrick Willis. I think he’ll be this year’s DeMeco Ryans.

  27. Flizzo says:

    Nice call!

  28. winit4mosi says:

I also like the fact that Niners are switching to the 3-4 this year. If your league is big on DEF scoring, then the Niners have some playmakers in their midst. Watch for a healthy (hopefully) Ray McDonald to make an impact as a rookie in this system.

  29. winit4mosi says:

Nice work overall, John. It always good to watch someone else go through it early, so you can take something away from the choices.

  30. Miles to Go says:

I think the squad looks very solid, as long as Leinert pans out. No real holes, and that’s a good start.

  31. PackFan says:

Why do you think nobody has any love for Adrian Peterson of the Bears? There seems to be lots of eggs in Cedric Benson’s basket.
