News, Notes, and Nuggets from the Owners’ Meetings

With the draft still more than a month away and the biggest names in free agency finding homes, we are in a little bit of a lull when it comes to news. However, John Hansen attended the combine and Adam Caplan spent time at the owners’ meetings looking to pick up any information from coaches, executives, and other team officials. What we have here are some of the nuggets from the coaches that spoke last week in Arizona.

Bruce Arians, Cardinals

-Believes addition of Rashard Mendenhall helps because of their history. Mendenhall doesn’t need to come out of the game.

-Prefers to use one RB instead of committee

-Wants to name starting QB ASAP, possibly by end of spring. Comfortable with Drew Stanton because he knows the system already and has some athleticism.

-Outside of Levi Brown at LT, there will be competition on the OL.

-Wants flexibility at TE because he doesn’t like to use a FB. Rob Housler praised for being an excellent receiver, just scratching the surface.

Tom Coughlin, Giants

-Excited about Brandon Myers’ catch total from 2012. Believe he’s well rounded and can help with ground game.

Jason Garrett, Cowboys

-Need more than one RB. Need to run it better. Need to balance offense and healthy [...]

Stay Watch: 2011 continues as we wait to hear if the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis grants the NFL a stay, which would extend the lockout at least another month through the expedited hearing on June 3. For now, we bring you actual football news.

Bryant shows up … After Jerry Jones and Dez Bryant were unable to meet last Friday about Bryant’s recent off-the-field troubles, but Bryant was finally with his teammates Wednesday as the Cowboys conducted workouts. QB Tony Romo said Bryantmoved around well, which, if true, is a good sign for someone who had surgery to repair a fractured fibula five months ago. Bryant missed the first day of informal player-led workouts because of a family issue but said he plans to be there for the rest. Bryant is a big key to the Cowboy offense this season, as if he stays healthy and focused, he has the talent to become a big-time receiver and certainly showed flashes of that last year. Roy Williams clearly isn’t the player he once was, and there’s plenty of room for Bryant to emerge as a playmaker on the outside opposite Miles Austin.

Hey, look at that! Positive news on the labor front! Okay, there is no reason to get excited yet, but any positive news is good news when it comes to the CBA.

Get ready for heavy doses of CBA talk … Thursday brought forth two seemingly important developments in the CBA talks between the owners and the NFLPA. For one, the two sides are scheduled to start a seven-day period of negotiations on Friday. It’s entirely possible that nothing happens and someone walks out well before seven days have been reached, but for now, it’s also possible that we will actually get seven straight days. At the very least, talking is better than not talking. Second, these negotiations will include a mediator, as the two sides have agreed to allow the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service to oversee things. These two developments by no means indicate that a deal will be reached by March 3 or any time soon, but they are certainly both positives, and mediation can only help. We’ll take any positive news we can get.

Driver plans to return to Green Bay … Veteran Packer WR Donald Driver said in a radio interview that he has no plans to [...]

  • Week 4 story lines September 25, 2014
Here are 66 stories to follow for Week 4 in the NFL N.Y. Giants (1-2) at Washington (1-2) Do the Giants come out throwing against a weak secondary, since it’s tough to run on the Redskins right now? I think they do, so I like Eli Manning, Victor Cruz, and I like Reuben Randle and Larry Donnell as sleepers. Eli will get 250 and 2 TDs tonight, one to Cruz and […]

There are plenty of story lines in the NFL right now, and here’s a quick list of the top ones I’m following in Week 3… Tampa Bay (0-2) at Atlanta (1-1) The continued emergence of Bobby Rainey, who the coaches really like and who looks to carry the mail this week. Even if Doug Martin returns, Martin could actually handle the Mike James role behind Rainey. Rai […]
