Equal Upside and the Quandary of the #1 Pick

I will be honest: the lockout jaded me. I was never particularly concerned about losing the 2011 season, or even a few games, but I did not go actively searching for mock drafts to whet my appetite for fantasy. What was the point? Everything would change anyway. Instead, I focused my attention on everything that’s gone up on this site over the last few weeks, namely the player profiles, and several things that have yet to come.

But – and I knew this would happen – draft season has descended upon us quickly. I like to draft as late as possible every year, but I’m sure I’ll be doing at least one draft within the next week. We don’t even have time to digest free agency before we have to assign values to the players that moved on. Hell, soon after I started throwing this post together, the Lions signed Jerome Harrison and Mike Bell to replace the injured Mikel Leshoure. No sooner did we bump up Jahvid Best’s value than we had to speculate on what the arrival of Harrison, in particular, means.

Of course, the mid rounds always have uncertainty. Even in a normal, non-lockout year, we’re either going to [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 5/10/11

The whole temporary stay thing is starting to sound permanent, as the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals has yet to rule on a stay that would allow the lockout to continue through the appeals process. But that doesn’t mean there is no court activity to discuss…

NFL files brief, gets NHL’s support … The wheels are in motion in the NFL’s appeal to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis, as the league filed its brief opposing Judge Susan Nelson’s injunction that lifted to the lockout. The NFL’s argument features more of the same points that we’ve been hearing over and over: the NFLPA’s decertification is a sham, Nelson didn’t have jurisdiction to lift the lockout, lifting the lockout causes harm to the league, etc. We’ve heard it all before, and we’ll continue to hear the same things. In the meantime, someone please take away Reggie Bush’s Twitter account.

We’re still waiting for the court to rule on granting the league a stay, although it already granted a temporary stay, which is why we still haven’t seen free agency. In the event that the lockout is lifted, the NFL has yet to decide on rules for operating without a new [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 4/27/11

While the NFL Draft begins tomorrow night and gives us a nice break from lockout talk, the whole event has been overshadowed by the endless labor battle that gets more confusing each day. For a few hours, we can actually talk football, but for now, we bring you more news on the labor front.

The most confusing day in NFL history … And on April 26, 2011, media members were forced to stand on street corners and count how many players chose to show up at “work,” only to not work out and leave 20 minutes later. Some players showed up at their team facilities, many didn’t, some were able to use equipment (the New York Giants), and others weren’t. What does it all mean? Great question.

We’re still waiting a ruling from Judge Susan Nelson on granting the owners a stay, which would allow the lockout to continue until the appeals process has played out over the next couple months. The NFLPA filed a motion in opposition, and it came in at 23 pages. Things are changing by the minute, but for now we’ll point you to ESPN’s detailed summary. Essentially, the players argue that a stay should be denied because [...]

  • 9/5 – 9/6 projections tweaks September 5, 2015
The final cuts are in, but we will most likely continue to have some news trickling out in the NFL over the next 1-2 days regarding roster spots, traded, etc. We’re not going to do our final update on our PDFs and Excel files until Sunday evening at the earliest, but I will but updating the projections on the site all weekend. If you have a draft and are loo […]

  • The latest projections August 30, 2015
Every year on this very day I am faced with the dilemma of having rankings that, despite being less than 2 days old, feel a little stale because of all the action in the critical third preseason game. The problem is it takes forever to update projections, comments, create the PDFs, create the excel files, and update all the apps. It cannot be done over the w […]

  • 8/17 USA Today mock draft August 19, 2015
I did an expert mock draft for USA Today and their special fantasy preview publication that will hit newsstands next week. I admittedly didn’t focus on the just the draft (I was working on several things at the time) and I simply queued up a bunch of players I liked. It wasn’t efficient at all, and I only like the squad (not love), but for what it’s worth th […]
