2012 NFL Draft Team Needs: NFC West

The 2012 NFL Draft is a week away, and this edition is much clearer than last year, at least in terms of team needs, because free agency has already taken place. Here on the staff blog, I’m breaking down each team’s top needs and fantasy outlook for the draft, going division by division. In the final post, we head to the NFC West, and, if you missed them, check out the AFC East, AFC North, AFC South, AFC West, NFC East, NFC North, and NFC South. Got a player you want your team to target? Let me know in the comments.

Also, be sure to take a look at our massive 2012 Pre-Draft Rookie Report, which takes an in-depth look at all the top fantasy prospects. And, as an early reminder, Joe Dolan and I will be conducting a live chat for commentary/questions during the 1st round of the draft next Thursday.

Arizona Cardinals

Picks: 13, 80, 112, 151, 177, 185, 221

Top Needs:

1. Offensive Tackle – The Cardinal offensive line has been lousy in pass protection, and that’s a big problem with Kevin Kolb at QB, because he really struggles dealing with pressure. Levi Brown has struggled, but the team re-signed him, so [...]

2012 NFL Draft Team Needs: NFC South

Atlanta Falcons

Picks: 55, 84, 157, 192, 229, 249

Top Needs:

1. Offensive Tackle – HC Mike Smith has given a vote of confidence to LT Sam Baker, who struggled last season, but Baker is in a contract year now. Are they going to commit to him again for the future? Of course, the Falcons don’t have a [...]

2012 NFL Draft Team Needs: NFC North

Chicago Bears

Picks: 19, 50, 79, 111, 150, 184, 220

Top Needs:

1. Offensive Tackle – The Bears addressed the offensive line in the 1st round of last year’s draft by taking Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi, but this unit remains a big issue. Carimi started just two games and had knee surgery, while starting LT J’Marcus Webb has struggled in pass protection. The Bears will have to think hard about drafting someone like Ohio State’s Mike Adams or Stanford’s Jonathan Martin in the 1st round. Yes, [...]

2012 NFL Draft Team Needs: NFC East

Dallas Cowboys

Picks: 14, 45, 81, 113, 135, 152, 186, 222

Top Needs:

1. Safety – The Cowboys signed former Jet Brodney Pool, but this unit is still in need of a playmaker. The Cowboys have had frequent issues on the back end, and they could be in perfect position with the 14th overall pick to draft Alabama SS Mark Barron, who is easily the best all-around safety in the draft, capable of making plays in the run game and against the pass.

2. Cornerback – The [...]

Denver Broncos

Picks: 25, 57, 87, 108, 120, 137, 188

Top Needs:

1. Defensive Tackle – The Broncos’ defensive tackle position is a bit of a mess right now. Brodrick Bunkley signed with the Saints, while Ryan McBean will miss the first six games of the season because of a suspension. Plus, Marcus Thomas remains a free agent. For now, that leaves Ty Warren and Kevin Vickerson in the middle of the Broncos’ 4-3 defense. With the 25th pick, they should be in good position to grab a [...]

Houston Texans

Picks: 26, 58, 76, 99, 121, 161, 195, 233

Top Needs:

1. Wide Receiver – The Texans have been unable to find a consistent producer opposite Andre Johnson the last few years, as

The Texans would surely love for Baylor WR Kendall Wright to fall to them in the 1st round.

neither Kevin Walter nor Jacoby Jones has been reliable. Walter is fine in the slot but shouldn’t start on the outside, while Jones has never lived up to his potential on a week [...]

2012 NFL Draft Team Needs: AFC North

With the 2012 NFL Draft only days away, we are taking a look at the top needs for each team, division by division. Today we head to the AFC North, and, if you missed it, check out the AFC East from Tuesday. Got a player you want your team to target? Let me know in the comments.

Baltimore Ravens

Picks: 29, 60, 91, 130, 164, 169, 198, 236

Top Needs:

1. Guard – The Ravens lost Pro Bowl LG Ben Grubbs in free agency to New Orleans, leaving them very thin at that spot. At the moment, 2011 3rd-round pick Jah Reid is expected to move from tackle to guard and start in place of Grubbs, but the Ravens could use some competition there. Guard is not always a position that’s in demand in the 1st round, but Wisconsin’s Kevin Zeitler would make sense with the 29th overall pick. Wisconsin C Peter Konz could also be a target with Matt Birk now 35 years old.

2. Linebacker – The Ravens could add help both inside and outside in their 3-4 scheme. [...]

2012 NFL Draft Team Needs: AFC East

Here on the staff blog, I’m going to break down each team’s top needs and fantasy outlook for the draft, going division by division. First up is the AFC East. Got a player you want your team to target? Let me know in the comments.

Buffalo Bills

Picks: 10, 41, 71, 105, 124, 144, 147, 178, 217, 251

Top Needs:

1. Offensive Tackle – The Bill offensive line actually held up well last year, giving up a league-low 23 sacks in the regular season. However, this area is still a concern, as starting LT Demetress Bell signed with the Eagles, leaving them with Erik Pears and Chris Hairston, a 2011 4th-round pick, as the tackles. The ideal scenario for Buffalo in the 1st round appears to be Iowa OT Riley Reiff falling to #10 overall. Our Greg Cosell also likes Ohio State’s Mike Adams, although the Bills may be able to trade down a few spots if they want to target him.

2. Wide Receiver – Yes, the Bills locked up top WR [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 5/2/11

We will have much more in-depth analysis of what the NFL Draft means for fantasy in coming days – in fact, the Post-Draft Stock Watch is already up – but as we did for the 1st round Friday, we bring you a quick round-up here of what happened on Days Two of Three of the draft as we wait for a pivotal ruling from the Eighth Circuit Court in St. Louis.

Mallett’s fall headlines Day Two … While both QBs Andy Dalton (#35 to Cincinnati) and Colin Kaepernick (#36 to San Francisco) went off the board earlier, the big news of Friday’s portion of the NFL was the fall of the polarizing Ryan Mallett. Mallett, who is the best pure passer in the draft, has had his character called into question, and he dropped all the way to the 74th pick overall in the 3rd round, where he landed with the Patriots. Obviously, the Patriots aren’t in immediate need of a starting QB, but it’s a good spot for Mallett to land because he’ll get to adjust to the NFL under the guidance of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. If maturity is a problem, there’s no better place for him to [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 4/28/11

For the first time in a long while, we have actual football to discuss. It is NFL Draft day everyone! Of course, we also have more courtroom stuff to talk about, and this time, there has been some real progress toward the off-season starting in earnest. We think. Whatever the case, we do have the draft to talk about tonight, and there’s a chance (again, we think) free agency might not be long after. For the breakdown there, we’ll give way to people smarter than us.

No word on whether either side hired Chubby Checker or the poet Virgil to navigate the River Styx through lockout purgatory.

Judge Nelson denies NFL’s request for a stay… Judge Susan Nelson, opining that the “irreparable harm” suffered by the players in a potential long lockout outweighs the damage that would be done to the owners if her ruling to overturn the lockout is not stayed, decided to deny the NFL’s request to stay her lockout-blocking ruling upon appeal. This is somewhat of a surprise; although most legal experts expected Nelson to side with the players in the preliminary injunction hearing, they also expected Nelson to issue a stay of the ruling while the NFL [...]

  • Week 4 story lines September 25, 2014
Here are 66 stories to follow for Week 4 in the NFL N.Y. Giants (1-2) at Washington (1-2) Do the Giants come out throwing against a weak secondary, since it’s tough to run on the Redskins right now? I think they do, so I like Eli Manning, Victor Cruz, and I like Reuben Randle and Larry Donnell as sleepers. Eli will get 250 and 2 TDs tonight, one to Cruz and […]

There are plenty of story lines in the NFL right now, and here’s a quick list of the top ones I’m following in Week 3… Tampa Bay (0-2) at Atlanta (1-1) The continued emergence of Bobby Rainey, who the coaches really like and who looks to carry the mail this week. Even if Doug Martin returns, Martin could actually handle the Mike James role behind Rainey. Rai […]
