Fantasy Guru Daily: 7/19/11

Is today going to be the last day we have a Fantasy Guru Daily without a labor deal imminent or an agreement in principle reached? We sure hope so. As the players and owners come down the home stretch in labor talks, we are preparing for the free-agency period, which could start as soon as Monday. What does this all mean?

CBA talks take another big step… Nearly nine hours of meeting on Monday brought the NFL and the decertified NFLPA even closer to a settlement in the Brady v. NFL case when NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith followed through on a promise to get increased benefits for retired players. While Smith is still looking for $320 million in lost benefits because of the uncapped 2010 NFL season, he did manage to lock up nearly $1 billion in improvements to the benefits program over the course of the next CBA, which is expected to last up to 10 years. The hope is that every big issue will be resolved by Wednesday morning, so the NFLPA can vote on approving a settlement via email or conference call with the 32 NFL team representatives, a vote that will likely also include the decision to [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 2/15/11

Despite the labor situation, we have some off-season action right now as teams start to use their franchise tags. Three 2010-11 playoff teams have announced moves, including one of the most important QBs in the league.

Vick, Mankins, and Harris get franchise treatment … All three moves had been reported as pending before, but they’re now

As of now, Eagle QB Michael Vick will make about $20 million in 2011 thanks to the franchise tag, but things remain uncertain thanks to the labor dispute.

official: the Patriots have placed a franchise tag on G Logan Mankins, the Eagles did the same with QB Michael Vick, and the Jets did the same with LB David Harris. By being franchised, each player will make the average of the top 5 players at their respective position in 2011. That means about $10 million for Mankins, who made the Pro Bowl despite holding out the first seven games of the 2010 season. Vick will make about $20 million – a significant raise from $5.25 in 2010 – after taking the starting job from Kevin Kolb and emerging as the top fantasy player in the league by far (29.7 FPG). Harris will make about $10 million, and [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 2/11/11

Happy Friday to everyone out there from all of us at FantasyGuru. Despite the Super Bowl taking place just five days ago, the off-season is already in full swing with lots of news from around the league.

Bronco WR Demaryius Thomas ruptured his Achilles … while working out in Atlanta and could miss up to eight months. This is the fourth different injury Thomas has suffered in the last year. He broke a bone in his foot while training for the Combine and re-injured the foot in the preseason, which kept him out until Week Two. A concussion and ankle injury suffered during the season limited him to just 10 games in his rookie year, in which he finished with 22 receptions, 283 yards, and 2 TDs. This is the second major injury issue for Bronco WRs, as Eddie Royal underwent hip surgery recently and is hoping to return in time for mini-camp (if it takes place).

Cam Newton impresses … at his workout for the media in San Diego. The 2010 Heisman Trophy winner went through a variety of passing and agility drills in the 45-minute session held at a local high school. Newton has been working with QB coach George [...]

Here are all the story lines I’m following for fantasy in Week Seven.  N.Y. Jets (1-5) at New England (4-2)  Who will carry the load at RB for the Patriots? You’d have to think this week it will be Brandon Bolden, since James White is inactive and Jonas Gray was just signed off the practice squad today and is active. Can Bandon LaFell keep it up and emerge a […]
