Fantasy Guru Daily: 2/16/11

Unless a CBA agreement is miraculously reached in the next two weeks, league news is going to come to a pretty sudden halt. But for now, we have some coaching hires, some franchise tags, and other miscellany to talk about.

Colts franchise Peyton… Although contract talks remain fluid between Peyton Manning and the Colts, Indy is going to make sure that the greatest player in team history won’t test the free-agent market. The Colts placed the franchise tag on Manning, meaning he will earn about $23 million in 2011 should the two sides not agree on a contract extension before the season begins. Manning’s salary is 120% of his $19.3 million salary in 2010; by rule, the franchise tag gives a player a one-year deal equivalent to the average salary of the five highest-paid players at the position or 120% of that player’s previous salary, whichever figure is higher. If you’re asking for a hunch, the Colts will get a deal with Manning worked out before the season.

Ngata gets tagged… Also on the franchise front, the Ravens opted to tag DT Haloti Ngata, which will pay him about $12.5 million in 2011. But honestly, we’d be surprised if it got to [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 2/1/11

Welcome to a Tuesday edition of the Fantasy Guru Daily, where we brave the Dallas snow from our office in New Jersey to bring you the news of the day. Today is Super Bowl Media Day, meaning there will be an endless supply of stories in tomorrow’s newspapers. For now, there’s plenty of news happening elsewhere in the league.

Bratkowski out in Cincy … The Bengals fired OC Bob Bratkowski on Monday after a 10-year tenure in Cincinnati that resulted in two playoff appearances (2005 and 2009) but eight seasons with losing records. Perhaps the most disappointing season was this one, as the Bengals entered with high hopes but went just 4-12. QB Carson Palmer’s career has gone downhill, and he even asked to be traded two weeks ago. The Bengals finished 13th in passing, 27th in rushing, and 22nd in scoring. They often played from behind, and RB Cedric Benson struggled to get into a rhythm, causing the rushing offense to drop from 9th to 27th. Despite meeting with Marvin Lewis recently, former Viking HC Brad Childress will reportedly not be Bratkowski’s replacement.

And the Defensive Player of the Year is … Steeler S Troy Polamalu edged Packer LB Clay [...]

  • Week 16 storylines December 19, 2014
Here are the top stories that I will be following in Week 16 for fantasy. Philadelphia (9-5) at Washington (3-11) Robert Griffin III did play better last week, but does it mean anything? It’s hard to trust him even against a beatable secondary and a defense that lost a top pass rusher in Trent Cole. If you’re playing in Week 17, can you trust DeSean Jackson, […]

  • Week 15 storylines December 13, 2014
Here are the top stories I’ll be following in Week 15 with some insight on some of them. Pittsburgh (8-5) at Atlanta (5-8) Will Julio Jones play? It’s obviously a huge key for Matt Ryan’s ability to hang with the Steelers in a high-scoring game. Without Jones, they have no explosiveness in the passing game and Ryan will have to dink-and-dunk to Roddy White a […]

  • Week 14 storylines December 6, 2014
Here are all the storylines that I will be following in Week 14 along with some commentary and information on the matchups. Pittsburgh (7-5) at Cincinnati (8-3-1) Can Ben Roethlisberger play better against a solid secondary that has limited him to only 16.0 points a game against them in his last four games? Is Heath Miller someone we can actually trust in th […]
