Fantasy Guru Daily: 5/25/11

We will be focusing on actual football stories until there is some legitimate news to talk about when it comes to the labor situation. Today we have injury updates on some major fantasy players and interesting news regarding two young QBs.

Peyton has neck surgery … and will be out six to eight weeks, according to Colts owner Jim Irsay. The procedure, Manning’s second on his neck since February of last year, was to remove park of a bulging disk. Manning had the surgery on Monday and was already home recovering on Tuesday. According to Manning, the discomfort started just recently and that this procedure was not related to the previous one. Manning anticipates a quick recovery, noting he began working out within two weeks of his first procedure last year. Irsay reiterated his hope to sign Manning to a long-term deal as soon as possible with the latest surgery having no effect on any possible contract. However, he did say Manning might have his throws limited in training camp with the team’s backups getting more work.

Did Peyton catch the injury bug from Tiger? We sure hope not.

Antonio Gates is healthy … according to Charger HC [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 5/3/11

After a flurry of noteworthy news items over the weekend, we’re left scrambling for scraps on Tuesday. It is actually a relief that there are no lockout updates to write about today, even though a major one (a decision on a stay pending appeal) is expected this week. Until then, we’ll get down with some usual maintenance.

UFL draft takes place on Twitter… Usually, this isn’t even worth mentioning, but the UFL held its draft entirely on Twitter last night. That’s pretty cool for about 15 seconds, until you realize that it’s the UFL. However, there is a little bit extra drama this year: guys who would typically be undrafted NFL free agents haven’t been able to sign with teams yet, and the UFL could provide them an interesting opportunity to show their stuff or at least have some sort of financial security for the next year. But even if the NFL season goes off without a hitch, the UFL wants to position itself as a unique opportunity for players like Boston College’s Mark Herzlich: play in the UFL and hone skills, or go to the NFL, be a camp body, and have a big chance of getting cut. Remember, if [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 2/11/11

Happy Friday to everyone out there from all of us at FantasyGuru. Despite the Super Bowl taking place just five days ago, the off-season is already in full swing with lots of news from around the league.

Bronco WR Demaryius Thomas ruptured his Achilles … while working out in Atlanta and could miss up to eight months. This is the fourth different injury Thomas has suffered in the last year. He broke a bone in his foot while training for the Combine and re-injured the foot in the preseason, which kept him out until Week Two. A concussion and ankle injury suffered during the season limited him to just 10 games in his rookie year, in which he finished with 22 receptions, 283 yards, and 2 TDs. This is the second major injury issue for Bronco WRs, as Eddie Royal underwent hip surgery recently and is hoping to return in time for mini-camp (if it takes place).

Cam Newton impresses … at his workout for the media in San Diego. The 2010 Heisman Trophy winner went through a variety of passing and agility drills in the 45-minute session held at a local high school. Newton has been working with QB coach George [...]
