2012 NFL Draft Team Needs: NFC South

The 2012 NFL Draft is nearly upon us, and this edition is much clearer than last year, at least in terms of team needs, because free agency has already taken place. Here on the staff blog, I’m breaking down each team’s top needs and fantasy outlook for the draft, going division by division. Today we head to the NFC South, and, if you missed them, check out the AFC East, AFC North, AFC South, AFC West, NFC East, and NFC North. Got a player you want your team to target? Let me know in the comments.

Also, be sure to take a look at our massive 2012 Pre-Draft Rookie Report, which takes an in-depth look at all the top fantasy prospects. And, as an early reminder, Joe Dolan and I will be conducting a live chat for commentary/questions during the 1st round of the draft next Thursday.

Top Needs:

1. Offensive Tackle – HC Mike Smith has given a vote of confidence to LT Sam Baker, who struggled last season, but Baker is in a contract year now. Are they going to commit to him again for the future? Of course, the Falcons don’t have a [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 7/18/11

Could this be the final week of labor talks? Things are looking good, and with free agency possibly just days away, the Monday edition of the Guru Daily features plenty of actual football talk… and some other stuff thanks to a Bengal RB.

Benson arrested … Free agent RB Cedric Benson was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge and released from jail Sunday in Austin, Texas. Full details, from the Cincinnati Enquirer:

According to an arrest affidavit, the former roommate was standing at a street corner in downtown Austin talking on his cell phone around 4:45 a.m. Sunday morning when a “hostile and aggressive” Benson approached him and said they had to talk about their problems.

The two began talking about their living arrangements when “all of a sudden he was struck on his face with a closed fist thrown by Benson,” according to the affidavit. Benson then struck him several more times, it said, resulting in injuries to the left side of the victim’s face.

It’s the second arrest of a Bengal player in the last week, as troubled CB Pacman Jones was arrested after an incident at a club. It’s also Benson’s second problem in the last two years in Austin [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 6/30/11

Is Michael Crabtree hurt or healthy? Is the lockout almost over or is there still a lot of work to be done? Is Carson Palmer finished in Cincinnati? We have a lot of questions with few concrete answers.

Crabtree says he’s fine … On Tuesday, the Sacramento Bee reported that 49er WR Michael Crabtree has been bothered by his left foot, which he had surgery on in 2009. Crabtree has sat out workouts for much of the Alex Smith-led sessions, but on Wednesday, he told reporters that everything was fine. And hey! Here’s Crabtree putting on shoes. Crabtree has caught some passes during workouts, and 49er OT Joe Staley stuck up for the receiver. Reporters have been allowed to watch only 30 minutes and haven’t seen Crabtree do much, but he’s insisted that he’s been active. So, if Crabtree is feeling even the slightest bit of discomfort, it probably isn’t a bad thing that he’s taking it easy during informal workouts. We really have no idea how significant the discomfort is though, and this is just one more story that makes us look forward to real football in September.

Fantasy Guru Daily: 6/1/11

There is not a lot of groundbreaking football news, but as players continue to conduct workouts, we will gladly accept any football tidbits we can get. Today, the FG Daily takes you to Foxboro, Detroit, Tampa, Nashville, and more.

Brady organizes workouts… Patriot QB Tom Brady is back in the Boston area this week, so he figured he’d call up his teammates

Tom Brady had his fun, but now it's time to get back to work in Boston.

and organize a workout. ESPNBoston.com reports that Brady, who has been working out on his own in California after undergoing foot surgery in January, is back in Boston for some charity work. With charity work set for the weekend, Brady’s Patriot teammates have joined him, and several players are set for organized workouts today. We’re still waiting to see if the Patriots will add a bigger WR to the mix to replace Randy Moss, but one candidate remains deep threat Brandon Tate, who has had a limited role in two seasons. For now, the Patriot offense will continue to be difficult to predict, as Brady spreads the ball around between Wes Welker, Deion Branch, Aaron Hernandez, and Rob Gronkowski, and RBs Shane Vereen and [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 5/26/11

Welcome to another lockout-free edition of the Fantasy Guru Daily, where we forget about the agonizing labor dispute and instead focus on what we all want to focus on: football.

Surgery for Ward… At least the injury didn’t happen on “Dancing with the Stars.” We here at the Fantasy Guru Daily have done our best to avoid discussing the appearance of Steeler WR Hines Ward on the hit ABC show, and now that it’s over and he apparently won, we can focus on his football. Well, he will undergo surgery to repair ligament damage in his left thumb, and he’s apparently been dealing with the injury since the end of the 2010 season. It was a disappointing year for Ward, as he saw his involvement in the offense take a big hit, and he didn’t have much value for fantasy in most weeks. He had four 100-yard games but was ineffective in many other games in a passing offense that lacked rhythm all season. Instead, the focus was on the running game and taking shots with Mike Wallace downfield. After putting up 95/1167/6 in 2009, Ward’s numbers plummeted to 59/755/5 with an average of 6.6 FPG. As for the injury, he [...]

I have been working on a massive Post Free Agency Stock Watch, which is aimed at putting all the activity into perspective and conveying to readers how free agency has changed the fantasy landscape for 2014. I use the word “massive” a lot because it describes most of the articles we do. I really want to continue to try to scale back our word counts because I […]
