Position Battle Playing Time for First Full Week of Preseason Action

We continue to update the position battles around the league, but in this blog, I thought looking at preseason playing time would be interesting. The depth chart doesn’t always tell the whole story and it’s certainly worth noting when players get in the game and who they get to play with, whether it’s with the first-team offense or the backups. If you’re looking for game reviews with stats, check out those our here. Let’s take a look at how the battles went in the first week of preseason action.

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys 

The Battle: Lance Dunbar vs. Joseph Randle vs. Ryan Williams for team’s backup RB job (#2)

Dunbar: Did not play.

Randle: Started (DeMarco Murray Did not play) and played into the 2nd quarter

Williams: Second RB in after Randle in 2nd quarter. Played into 3rd quarter with backups.

The Battle: Brandon Weeden vs. Caleb Hanie for team’s backup QB job (#2)

Weeden: Started (Tony Romo Did not play) and played entire 1st half.

Hanie: Came in after Weeden and played entire 3rd quarter with backups.

New York Giants

The Battle: Rueben Randle vs. Odell Beckham Jr. for team’s starting WR job (#2) 

Randle: Started along with Victor Cruz and Jerrel Jernigan. Played 1st half with starters and backups.

Beckham: Did not play.

The Battle: Rashad Jennings vs. Andre Williams vs. Peyton Hillis for team’s starting and backup RB jobs (#1 and #2)

Jennings: Started and played 1st quarter.

Williams: Came in after Jennings and played mostly with backups in 2nd quarter. Didn’t play 2nd half.

Hillis: Did not play for injury.

The Battle: Adrien Robinson vs. Xavier Grimble vs. Daniel Fells vs. Kellen Davis vs. Larry Donnell for team’s starting TE job (#1)

Robinson: Played in 4th quarter with backups.

Grimble: Did not play.

Fells: Did not play.

Davis: Played in 2nd quarter with backups.

Donnell: Started (also started HOF game) and played with starters and backups in 1st half.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Battle:
Jeremy Maclin vs. Riley Cooper vs. Jordan Matthews for team’s starting WR jobs (#1 and #2)

Maclin: Started.

Cooper: Did not play.

Matthews: First touch came midway through 2nd quarter with backups. Last touch came in 3rd quarter.

The Battle: Zach Ertz vs. Brent Celek for team’s starting TE job (#1)

Ertz: Started in 2-TE set. Last touch came in 2nd quarter with backups.

Celek: Started in 2-TE set. Only touches came with starters.

Washington Redskins 

The Battle: Roy Helu vs. Evan Royster for team’s backup RB job (#2)

Helu: Didn’t start, but got time with starters and backups. Last touch came at end of 1st quarter.

Royster: Entered after Helu and played with backups. No touches after 2nd quarter.

NFC North

Chicago Bears

The Battle: Marquess Wilson vs. Josh Morgan for team’s #3 WR job

Wilson: Did not play.

Morgan: Played with backups. Touches came in 2nd quarter.

The Battle: Ka’Deem Carey vs. Michael Ford vs. Shaun Draughn for team’s backup RB job (#2)

Carey: Entered with backups in 2nd quarter. Played into 3rd quarter.

Ford: First carry came in 3rd quarter with backups. Also used as returner.

Draughn: Only touches came with backups at end of 2nd quarter.

The Battle: Jordan Palmer vs. Jimmy Clausen vs. David Fales for team’s backup QB job (#2)

Palmer: Second QB in the game after Cutler at end of 1st quarter. Finished by end of 1st half.

Clausen: Came in after Palmer. Played entire 3rd quarter.

Fales: Came in after Clausen. Played entire 4th quarter.

Detroit Lions

The Battle: Reggie Bush vs. Joique Bell for team’s starting RB job (#1)

Bush: Started. Never had a touch after the first series.

Bell: Played with starters in first series. Played with backups in second series. Never had a touch after that.

The Battle: Eric Ebron vs. Brandon Pettigrew for team’s starting TE job (#1)

Ebron: First target came in third series. Played with backups into 3rd quarter.

Pettigrew: Started.

Green Bay Packers

The Battle: Jarrett Boykin vs. Davante Adams for team’s #3 WR job

Boykin: Started with Adams and Randall Cobb (Jordy Nelson Did not play). Played into 2nd quarter.

Adams: Started with Boykin and Randall Cobb (Jordy Nelson Did not play). Played into 2nd quarter with starters and backups and also used on returns.

The Battle: Andrew Quarless vs. Brandon Bostick vs. Richard Rodgers vs. Colt Lyerla for team’s starting TE job (#1)

Quarless: Only touch came at the end of the 1st half with the backups.

Bostick: First looks after Rodgers in the 2nd quarter

Rodgers: Started. Touches came in the first two series.

Lyerla: Did not play.

Minnesota Vikings

The Battle: Matt Asiata vs. Jerick McKinnon for team’s backup RB job (#2)

Asiata: Started with Adrian Peterson resting. Never had a touch after first series.

McKinnon: Came in with backups after Asiata. Played rest of 1st half and also used as a returner.

The Battle: Matt Cassel vs. Teddy Bridgewater vs. Christian Ponder for team’s starting and backup QB jobs (#1 and #2)

Cassel: Started. Played first series.

Bridgewater: Came in after Cassel and played into the first series of the 3rd quarter.

Ponder: Came in after Bridgewater and played until the end.

NFC South

Atlanta Falcons

The Battle: Devonta Freeman vs. Jacquizz Rodgers for team’s backup RB job (#2)

Freeman: Came into the game after Antone Smith in the 2nd quarter, but did play into the 4th quarter

Rodgers: Started (Steven Jackson didn’t play) and played first series. Was also used on special teams.

Carolina Panthers

The Battle: Kelvin Benjamin vs. Jerricho Cotchery vs. Jason Avant vs. Tavarres King vs. Tiquan Underwood for team’s starting and backup WR jobs (#1, #2 and #3)

Benjamin: Started and played into 2nd quarter.

Cotchery: First touch came on second series.

Avant: No targets.

King: Played with backups in 3rd quarter and into 4th quarter.

Underwood: Only target came with backups in 2nd quarter

The Battle: DeAngelo Williams vs. Jonathan Stewart for team’s starting RB job (#1)

Williams: Did not play.

Stewart: Did not play.

New Orleans Saints 

The Battle: Kenny Stills vs. Brandin Cooks for team’s starting WR job (#2)

Stills: Did not play.

Cooks: Played with starters and backups in 1st half. Also used as a returner.

The Battle: Pierre Thomas vs. Mark Ingram vs. Khiry Robinson for team’s starting and backup RB jobs (#1 and #2)

Thomas: Did not play.

Ingram: Started. Played before and after Robinson.

Robinson: Got some time with starters and backups playing into 2nd quarter.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 

The Battle: Mike Glennon vs. Josh McCown for team’s starting QB job (#1)

Glennon: Came in after McCown in the 2nd quarter and played into 4th quarter.

McCown: Started and played first four series.

The Battle: Charles Sims vs. Bobby Rainey vs. Mike James for team’s backup RB job (#2)

Sims: First touch came after Rainey with backups and remained through 3rd quarter.

Rainey: Played with starters at end of 1st quarter and was in after Doug Martin. Played with backups into 2nd quarter. Also used as a returner.

James: First touch came with backups in 3rd quarter and remained for rest of game.

The Battle: Tim Wright vs. Brandon Myers vs. Austin Seferian-Jenkins for team’s starting TE job (#1) 

Wright: First touch came in 2nd quarter after ASJ and played into 3rd quarter.

Myers: Started.

Seferian-Jenkins: First touch came in 2nd quarter with backups and played into 4th quarter.

NFC West

Arizona Cardinals

The Battle: Stepfan Taylor vs. Jonathan Dwyer for team’s backup RB job (#2)

Taylor: First touch came with backups on second series and played into 2nd quarter.

Dwyer: First touch came after Taylor at two-minute warning in 2nd quarter. Played into 3rd quarter.

The Battle: John Brown vs. Ted Ginn for team’s #3 WR job

Brown: Played with starters and backups in 1st half.

Ginn: Did not play.

The Battle: Rob Housler vs. John Carlson vs. Troy Niklas for team’s starting TE job (#1)

Housler: Played with starters in first series.

Carlson: Played with starters in first series.

Niklas: First touch came after two-minute warning in 1st half with backups.

San Francisco 49ers

The Battle: Carlos Hyde vs. Marcus Lattimore for team’s backup RB job (#2)

Hyde: Started and played into second series with backups.

Lattimore: Did not play.

Seattle Seahawks

The Battle: Doug Baldwin vs. Jermaine Kearse vs. Paul Richardson for team’s starting WR job (#2)

Baldwin: Started with Kearse and Percy Harvin. Remained into 2nd quarter.

Kearse: Started with Baldwin and Percy Harvin. Only target came in 1st quarter.

Richardson: First target came with backups near end of 2nd quarter and played into 4th quarter.

The Battle: Christine Michael vs. Robert Turbin for team’s backup RB job (#2)

Michael: Played with starters and remained in game with backups into 3rd quarter.

Turbin: Started with Marshawn Lynch sitting out and played with starters into 2nd quarter.

St. Louis Rams

The Battle: Zac Stacy vs. Tre Mason for team’s starting RB job (#1)

Stacy: Started and played in first two series.

Mason: Got first touch after Benny Cunningham in 2nd quarter and played into 3rd quarter. Also used as a returner.

The Battle: Tavon Austin vs. Kenny Britt vs. Brian Quick vs. Stedman Bailey vs. Chris Givens vs. Austin Pettis for team’s starting and backup WR jobs (#1, #2 and #3)

Austin: Used as a returner, but first offensive touch didn’t come until late in 2nd quarter with backups

Britt: Started.

Quick: Started and got time with backups.

Bailey: Used as a returner, but also played on offense in 2nd quarter. Used as a returner.

Givens: Used as a returner. First target came at end of 3rd quarter with backups.

Pettis: Only target came at end of 2nd quarter with backups.

AFC East

Buffalo Bills

The Battle: Bryce Brown vs. Anthony Dixon for team’s backup RB job (#3)

Brown: First touch came before Dixon, but both were in on same drive in 2nd quarter. Played into 4th quarter

Dixon: First touch came with backups in 2nd quarter, but played into 4th quarter.

The Battle: Robert Woods vs. Mike Williams vs. Chris Hogan vs. Marquise Goodwin for team’s starting and backup WR jobs (#2 and #3)

Woods: Played with starters and backups for 1st half.

Williams: Started for second straight game opposite Sammy Watkins.

Hogan: Played in first series with starters.

Goodwin: Played with backups in 2nd quarter.

Miami Dolphins

The Battle: Lamar Miller vs. Knowshon Moreno vs. Daniel Thomas for team’s starting RB job (#1)

Miller: Started and played first series.

Moreno: Did not play.

Thomas: Did not play.

New England Patriots

The Battle: Aaron Dobson vs. Brandon LaFell vs. Kenbrell Thompkins for team’s #3 WR job

Dobson: Did not play.

LaFell: Started with Thompkins. Last target came at end of 1st quarter.

Thompkins: Started with LaFell. Last target came at end of 1st quarter.

The Battle: Brandon Bolden vs. James White for team’s #3 RB job

Bolden: Did not play.

White: Came in after Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen, but did get some time with some starters. Last touch came at end of 1st quarter.

The Battle: Chris Johnson vs. Chris Ivory for team’s starting RB job (#1)

Johnson: Played with starters in first series and with backups into 2nd quarter.

Ivory: Started. Played with starters in first series and with backups into 2nd quarter.

The Battle: Michael Vick vs. Geno Smith for team’s starting QB job (#1)

Vick: Came in after Smith and played until end of 1st half.

Smith: Started and played two series.

The Battle: Jeff Cumberland vs. Jace Amaro vs. Zach Sudfeld for team’s starting TE job (#1)

Cumberland: Only touch came in second series with starters.

Amaro: Played with some starters in 2nd quarter and played with backups into 3rd quarter.

Sudfeld: First touch came with backups in 3rd quarter.

The Battle: Jeremy Kerley vs. David Nelson vs. Stephen Hill for team’s starting WR job (#2)

Kerley: Started. No targets.

Nelson: Started and ended up playing with backups into 3rd quarter.

Brown: First target came in 3rd quarter, but was in the game in early 2nd quarter.

Hill: Played with backups in 1st quarter and into 3rd quarter.

Keenum: Came in after Fitzpatrick to start 2nd half.

Hillman: Started and played 1st half.

Anderson: Got some time with starters and ended up leaving with concussion in 2nd quarter.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Battle: Donnie Avery vs. A.J. Jenkins for team’s starting WR job (#2)

Avery: Started. No targets.

Jenkins: Did not play.

The Battle: Anthony Fasano vs. Travis Kelce for team’s starting TE job (#1)

Fasano: Played with starters in 1st quarter.

Kelce: Played with backups in 2nd quarter.

Oakland Raiders

The Battle: Darren McFadden vs. Maurice Jones-Drew for team’s starting RB job (#1)

McFadden: Came in after MJD and had just one touch with starters before leaving.

Jones-Drew: Started. All four touches came before McFadden and happen in first two series.

The Battle: Matt Schaub vs. Derek Carr for team’s starting QB job (#1)

Schaub: Started. Played three series.

Carr: Came in after Schaub in 2nd quarter and played until almost the end of the 3rd quarter.

The Battle: Andre Holmes vs. Rod Streater vs. James Jones vs. Denarius Moore vs. Juron Criner vs. Greg Little for team’s starting WR jobs (#1 and #2)

Holmes: Started. Played with starters into 2nd quarter.

Streater: Started. Didn’t have a target.

Jones: No targets.

Moore: Played with backups into 2nd half and used as a returner.

Criner: Played with backups into 3rd quarter.

Little: Played with backups into 3rd quarter.

The Battle: David Ausberry vs. Mychal Rivera for team’s starting TE job (#1)

Ausberry: Did not play.

Rivera: Played with starters into 2nd quarter.

San Diego Chargers

The Battle: Antonio Gates vs. Ladarius Green for team’s starting TE job (#1)

Gates: Did not play.

Green: Started and played 1st quarter.

The Battle: Malcom Floyd vs. Vincent Brown for team’s starting WR job (#2)

Floyd: Started opposite Keenan Allen.

Brown: Did not play.
