Player Notes: Hillman, J Bell, Turbin, Harris

We spent some time watching 2012 game tape on some of the more intriguing fantasy players for the upcoming season. The players we chose to watch weren’t necessarily marquee fantasy players in 2012, but they could be key players this upcoming season. We tried to pinpoint some of the strengths and weaknesses of each player by watching a couple games. We decided to publish a series of blogs detailing what we saw with our raw notes.

These are raw notes, so forgive grammatical errors or the occasional poor language. Nor were they intended to be comprehensive or definitive takes. We simply thought it’d be another way to gain some extra insight into some of the more intriguing 2013 fantasy players. We watched 36 players total, so we’ll post notes on 4 players a day over a nine-day period. Here are the players we watched and when our notes will be posted:

July 31: Chris Ivory, Daryl Richardson, Cecil Sorts, Dennis Pitta

Aug. 1: Shane Vereen, Danario Alexander, Josh Gordon, T.Y. Hilton

Aug. 2: Chris Givens, Kendall Wright, Michael Floyd, Bernard Pierce

Aug. 5: Pierre Garcon, Antonio Brown, Torrey Smith, Vernon Davis

Aug. 6: Greg Olsen, Dwayne Allen, Greg Little, Bryce Brown

Aug. 12: Mohamed Sanu, Jared Cook, Antonio Gates, Rob Housler

Ronnie Hillman

Week 8 vs. NO (14/86/0, 1/-4/0) 8.2 FPG

-alludes a crashing defender in the backfield with sidestep, gets up the middle and dives ahead for 7 yards.

-shows great speed to get to outside on counter run, but does get tripped up on a weak ankle tackle to limit gain to 4 yards instead of potential TD.

-finally follows his blocks off of LT and makes proper cut inside, runs through weak arm tackle, gets upfield for 31 yards, but held ball loose and CB knocked it out of his hands but luckily out of bounds. Immediately pulled for final 6 plays of series.

-gets right edge and shows his superior speed to quickly get upfield for 24 yards in the blink of an eye. Showing he’s a home run or bust guy in this game.

-a bit tentative on run off LT but picked his way forward for 4-yard gain.

-tries to bounce a run outside when it should’ve followed his pulling guard off of LT, only 2-yard gain.

-too much hesitation again on a run off of RT, keeps play alive and bounces it to left side for 4 yards but could’ve been a huge negative play.

-doesn’t exactly sell a middle screen for long enough, lost 4 yards on the play.

Week 11 vs. SD (12/43/0, 2/16/0) 7.9 FPG

-run off right end and easily gets the corner, follows the block of his WR to get to the sideline for a 21-yard gain.

-solid out route coming out of the backfield off PA, but tripped up way too easily by ankle tackle from CB after 4-yard gain.

-finally sticks his nose down and blows through proper hole on run up middle for 3-yard gain.

-follows his pulling LG on run off of LT, gets up field and to the sideline, protects the ball when CB comes from behind to try and strip it on 19-yard gain. 40 of his 43 rushing yards came on 2 carries.

-lined up in the slot, Manning doesn’t hesitate to hit him in the flat on first read, picks up 12 yards.

-slight counter play off of C which would’ve netted at least 4 yards from SD 8-yard line, tried to bounce it out off RT and only gained a yard.

Joique Bell

Week 9 @ Jac (13/73/1, 3/36/0) 19.9 FPG

-initial hole off of LG is occupied but spots room off of LT and gets through the new hole for 6 yards.

-sneaks out of backfield uncovered in the middle of the, turns it up the field to get the first down and 12 yards.

-pass to the right flat, hurdles CB going low to try to tackle him, picks up 10 yards and first down.

-run up middle looks occupied but juke to his right buys him more room and picks up 9 yards.

-good vision to see DE crashing to hard on run up the middle, bounces it off the LT and gets up the field for 14 yards.

-initial run off of RT, subtle juke to middle gets him upfield and carries MLB on his back for 5 yards.

-has great vision and quick hips to find small cutback opportunities on 10-yard TD run.

Week 13 vs. Ind (7/81/0, 3/21/0 FPG) 13.2 FPG

-sets up screen pass well, sidesteps the one threat and follows his two big linemen downfield for 15 yards.

-sidesteps a defender in the backfield on a run up the middle and makes small cut off pulling LG for 5 yards.

-not afraid to line him up in the slot, catches short flat pass for 3 yards.

-follows LG on run off RT and lets him take out LB, spins out of a tackle from S and keeps feet moving forward and is out in front, stays on feet during a diving tackle attempt, and is finally drug down from behind at 13-yard line after 67-yard gain. Impressive individual effort.

-slight hesitation on run of LT lets a backside DE come crashing in to take him down 2-yard loss.

Robert Turbin

Week 4 @ Stl (6/45/0, 2/13/0) 7.8 FPG

-doesn’t quit on PA pass as clear last option, makes himself available along sideline, and Wilson hits him for 6 yards when the play breaks down and leaves pocket.

-lined up in the slot on 2nd-and-15, nice pivot route for 7-yard gain, keeps ball in tight from big swat from LB trying to strip him.

-makes proper cut to inside on run off LT, following FB, and punishes S flying down to stop him and keeps legs churning backward for 9 yards.

-hits hole quick and blows up a CB trying to tackle him downfield on run off of RT, picks up 11 yards.

-loses balance and footing on dome turf on cut to the middle, limiting him to a 2-yard run.

-great vision to notice backside of defense overpursuing on run to the left, lets the scrum go by and bounces it to the right and breaks two desperate arm tackles to snap off 9 yards.

-run off LT, one cut and knifes inside off of LG through small crevice to pick up 13 yards.

-failed to follow his FB on run off of LT, instead cutting back early and grabbing only a yard.

Week 14 vs. Ari (20/108/0) 10.8 FPG

-runs past LB on flat-and-up play, gets a couple steps, but Wilson’s pass is underthrown, allowing LB to get a finger on it and prevent potential 32-yard TD.

-sidestepped a defender back inside then another juke back outside in the hole, uses his hand to propel himself forward for an extra couple yards after defender trips him from behind on 16-yard run.

-sets up blocks well on run off LT and tunnels forward for 10 yards.

-slips through a couple missed tackles against run-stacked box in a blowout for 7 yards.

-shows a little bit of speed to the sideline after getting through the middle of the field on run up the gut, picks up 26 yards.

-a little slow to the holes in this game, looking a little more tentative in this game, letting defense catch him from backside. Just not the same burst that he had in the St. Louis tape.

-loses balance and footing on a cut on a run for no gain.

-doesn’t have the speed to outrun a LB to the edge of the field on a run off of left end for just a yard gain.

DuJuan Harris

Week 17 @ Min (14/70/0, 2/17/0) 10.7 FPG

-rips through an arm tackle on run off of RT and lunges ahead for a 9-yard gain.

-cuts it back off of LT on a play originally designed for the right side, losses his balance a bit but still lunges forward for 8 yards.

-pitch play to the right, cuts it back left and runs with a full head of steam for 12 yards.

-lots of pitch plays for Harris, shows some patience to cut it back when the defense overpursues to the outside.

-adjusts to a low pass at his knees on route running away from QB for a 6-yard pickup.

-shifts smoothly in the hole, explodes though hole and into second level for 19-yard gain.

-runs right into the back of his lineman on run up the middle, not great reactions, just a 1-yard gain.

Divisional @ SF (11/53/1, 2/11/0) 14.4 FPG

-lowers head and drives pile forward on run up the middle for 7-yard gain.

-lets blocks develop on run up the middle, chops his feet and cuts to make S dive for air and hits paydirt on 18-yard run.

-showed good hands on an awkward pass out of the backfield and still got upfield for 6 yards.

-can’t adjust to some penetration from D-line, tripped on his own O-lineman’s feet and falls forward for 2 yards.

-didn’t follow his pulling LG on a play off RT, negating a possible nice gain.

-bounced a play outside but didn’t have enough speed to outrun Bowman to the sideline, even with a step or two.
