Player Notes: Garcon, A Brown, T Smith, V Davis

We spent some time watching 2012 game tape on some of the more intriguing fantasy players for the upcoming season. The players we chose to watch weren’t necessarily marquee fantasy players in 2012, but they could be key players this upcoming season. We tried to pinpoint some of the strengths and weaknesses of each player by watching a couple games. We decided to publish a series of blogs detailing what we saw with our raw notes.

These are raw notes, so forgive grammatical errors or the occasional poor language. Nor were they intended to be comprehensive or definitive takes. We simply thought it’d be another way to gain some extra insight into some of the more intriguing 2013 fantasy players. We watched 36 players total, so we’ll post notes on 4 players a day over a nine-day period. Here are the players we watched and when our notes will be posted:

Pierre Garcon

Week 13 vs. NYG (8/106/1) 24.6 FPG

-abuses CB on playaction pass, fakes inside on post and breaks out to corner for easy 25-yard pickup.

-sliding catch on a post pass on a low throw, digs it out for an 18-yard gain.

-next play is another post pattern off of playaction, this time it’s caught in stride and runs all the way across the field and avoids some tackles to pick up an 15 yards on a 35-yard gain.

-playaction rollout to the right, on a intermediate drag keeps coming across the field and finally gets open late for an 8-yard TD catch. Lots of patience and trust from Griffin and Garcon.

-yet another post pattern hookup off of playaction, this time with the chance to get one first down to essentially run the clock out and end the game. Can tell the coaching staff has a ton of confidence in this play, bread & butter.

-tried to go inside after a catch on a curl, when he could’ve spun to the outside and had a chance for more yardage.

Week 14 vs. Bal (5/83/1) 19.3 FPG

-quick curl pass, lots of cushion and takes advantage, catching it and getting upfield for 14 yards.

-gave him a carry on an end-around but only picked up 2 yards, but shows the Skins like to get the ball in his hands anyway they can.

-initially looked like he intended to run post pattern but saw zone coverage and settled into a soft spot for 17-yard gain.

-another post pattern, finds spot in front of Ed Reed to make a 22-yard catch.

-looked to be one of last options on a play in red zone, but Cousins flushed a bit from pocket and Garcon kept himself available at the front pylon for game tying TD late in the fourth quarter.

Antonio Brown

Week 15 @ Dal (8/76/1) 21.6 FPG

-bring him inside a bit in motion to recognize man defense, runs out pattern for 7-yard gain.

- works open on square in, Roethlisberger flushed from pocket a bit but Brown makes himself available for 15-yard gain.

-another deep crossing pattern, Roethlisberger once again out of pocket and finds Brown across middle of field for 18 yards.

-short inside motion again, recognize man defense and gets switched onto nickel CB, breaks off another out pattern, this time for a 7-yard TD.

-quick slant, doesn’t really work enough to get inside and Roethlisberger leads him a little far, almost results in an INT.

-dropped pass on a short curl pattern to pick up a potential first down and put the Steelers in the red zone.

-Brown drops a little tougher pass on a comeback pattern for a first down late in the fourth quarter.

Week 16 vs. Cin (5/97/1) 20.7 FPG

-pretty much taken out of the play but Roethlisberger extends the action and Brown gets open along the sideline for 13 yards.

-nice double move gets him open on a fly pattern for a 60-yard touchdown. Faked like he was doing a comeback to the outside and broke back inside and flew past CB for TD.

-works open just enough on an intermediate dig pattern and catches it in traffic for 14-yard gain.

-runs a hitch route 7 yards down inside the 20-yard line when the Steelers needed to pick up 8 yards for a first down.

Torrey Smith

Week 3 vs. NE (6/127/2) 30.7 FPG

-blows right past CB on inside back to outside move, goes up to catch a pass with a lot of zip and not much air for 25 yards.

-short drag route left wide open in the middle of the field and outruns defense to get to the sideline and up field for 11 yards.

-given a lot of cushion on post route, plants his foot and turns back outside to avoid a closing CB to pick up an extra 10 yards for a 32-yard gain.

-CB takes away outside release, still fakes outside before going inside to get two steps and eventually works back outside to make vertical catch in front of safety for 38-yard gain.

-bad throw on fly route but turns into defensive back and breaks up pass that could’ve been intercepted.

-blanketed on a half-hearted slant route in the end zone, works back to the sideline with Flacco flushed to the right, makes a catch a diving catch with defender all over him for 5-yard TD.

Week 12 @ SD (7/144/0) 21.4 FPG

-sharp break on out route, stops on a dime near sideline and pushes CB off him with one arm, gets upfield for 12 yards.

-gets open just enough out of slot with nickel CB on drag route and turns on the burners, running past a safety who took a bad angle and breaking the ankles of the second safety in the open field, turning a 2-yard route into a 54-yard gain.

-finds a soft spot in the middle of the field against zone cover, quickly gets upfield to pick up some YAC for 22-yard gain.

-gets outside release and looks to be going vertical, CB turns and runs deep and Smith breaks it off on a curl route for 14 yards.

-uses his arms and body well to position himself to make deep catches, even on balls he can’t haul in, always seems to have a chance to bring it in .

-fly route down right side with CB all over him, Flacco throws a back-shoulder pass, waits until the last second to react to the pass as to not tipoff defender, leaps and hangs in air to bring in the 31-yard pass.

Vernon Davis

Week 5 vs. Buf (5/106/0) 15.6 FPG

-delays on playaction pass over middle, hurdles safety going low to take him out, 21-yard gain canceled out on offensive holding call.

-gets wide open on an out-and-up pattern down the sideline, no safety over the top, runs right under the pass before the safety knocks him out after 53-yard gain.

-short drag route, uses referee in the middle of the field as a pick, throws defender off of him after catch and spins off of another, for 13-yards YAC on 17-yard gain.

-lined up in slot in trips to the left, recognizes Bills are switching man coverage, Crabtree comes inside on slant to switch coverage, Davis starts on out route and settles in middle of field for an easy 11-yard gain.

-another out-and-up pattern, this time it’s well-defended but this time it’s against MLB, so he eventually gets a step or two and runs under perfect pass for 24-yard gain.

-ran the out-and-up pattern three times during this game, clearly liked the matchup on LB or S.

-goes down like a pile of bricks on flat route on tackle by LB, picks up just a yard but a late throw from Smith as well.

Week 11 vs. Chi (6/83/1) 20.3 FPG

-playaction pass to backside, rips through CB’s hold and gets to sideline and makes a leaping catch and gets both feet down for 22 yards.

-gets out of out route quickly to get separation from LB and barrels through the CB to get 12 yards.

-shows great patience on playaction pass near goal line, really sells the fake before sneaking out last second to catch easy 3-yard TD from Kaepernick.

-lined up in the slot after shifting into a 5-wide set, gets LB on him, runs a post and easily gets open and carries S on him for a 32-yard gain.

-makes tough catch in middle of the field between three defenders on crossing pattern for 11 yards.
