Fantasy Guru Daily: 3/3/11

Well, here we are. It is March 3. The day of reckoning is upon us. Despite seemingly endless mediated talks in Washington over the last couple weeks, we are a mere hours away from the CBA expiring with no new deal in place.

March 3 arrives … The CBA expires tonight, and we await word on what happens to football in the immediate future. While a new deal seems highly unlikely, there is still hope that the two sides agree to extend the deadline and bargain for a few more days or weeks, meaning there has been some progress and a lockout could be avoided. If that’s not the case, then it remains possible that the NFLPA will decide to decertify before the day ends, meaning the union will cease to exist and individual antitrust lawsuits may be filed. And, of course, we still face the threat of the owners locking out the players. Once again, we recommend reading Andrew Brandt’s take at the National Football Post, where he lays out all the possibilities. Fasten your seatbelts, things are about to get interesting. We’ll continue to hope for the best.

The labor talks are obviously the big story in the NFL with the CBA expiration date approaching rapidly. With the chance of a lockout looming, teams are making some last-minute roster moves, whether it be signings, releases, or placing RFA tenders (which may mean nothing) on certain players.

The NFLPA gets a favorable ruling … from U.S. District Judge David Doty, who declared that the NFL was in violation of the CBA by locking up $4 billion in television revenue to help survive a possible lockout. Despite the NFL downplaying the ruling by saying it was expected and that the teams were prepared for the possibility, there’s no doubt that this is a huge victory for the NFLPA since we are talking about billions of dollars. A hearing will be held to determine what happens to the money and whether or not the players will receive damages as a result of the violation by the NFL. After meeting for six hours on Tuesday, the two sides continue mediation talks on Wednesday with the entire NFL labor committee and the NFLPA executive committee present, including NFLPA president Kevin Mawae. With an owners meeting also scheduled on Wednesday just 25 miles away from [...]

Fantasy Guru Daily: 3/1/11

In recent history, March has signified the first month in the calendar year without an NFL game, and the first in general since July. In 2011, that fact could have a more gruesome meaning. Things are changing this year, and the NFLPA and the owners are going to have to eventually work hard to ensure that games start to kick off in August or September. Anything can happen over the next few days, weeks, and months, but expect to get tired of the rhetoric if a lockout begins this week.

Mediation to resume today… The NFL and NFLPA will resume meeting with mediator George Cohen in Washington today, just three days before the CBA expires, with it coming a potential lockout from the owners and/or decertification from the union. Hope for a deal by that point seems completely bleak, but stranger things have happened. The fact of the matter is that the only people knowing what’s going on in that room are the people in it. We’ll be hearing a hell of a lot about this over the next few days, so be prepared.

  • Week 7 story lines October 17, 2014
Here are all the story lines I’m following for fantasy in Week Seven.  N.Y. Jets (1-5) at New England (4-2)  Who will carry the load at RB for the Patriots? You’d have to think this week it will be Brandon Bolden, since James White is inactive and Jonas Gray was just signed off the practice squad today and is active. Can Bandon LaFell keep it up and emerge a […]

Here are the top stories I’ll be following this week in the NFL… Indianapolis (3-2) at Houston (3-2) Can the Colts maintain their high level of play with 2 starters on the OL out tonight? Can Trent Richardson bounce back from a poor game last week against a tough Raven defense? Can Dwayne Allen score yet again and remain a huge factor? He’s being moved all o […]

  • Week 5 story lines October 3, 2014
Here are 88 story lines I’ll be following in Week 5 . Minnesota (2-2) at Green Bay (2-2) Will the Vikings continue to play like they did last week? It wasn’t a typical Norv Turner offense, more like Seattle’s with Russell Wilson. Teddy Bridgewater was smart about not exposing himself to hits, but he did get banged up in only one start and he might miss the g […]
