Greetings everyone. The Fantasy Guru Daily is back for the week. And although we are now entering Super Bowl week, the other 30 teams in the NFL have been active as well. Here is a roundup from some of the top news of the past weekend.
Eagles plan to franchise Vick… This should come as no surprise, but it is nice to have some confirmation on it anyway. With Michael Vick approaching free agency, Philadelphia plans to put the franchise tag on its star QB so it can then listen to trade
offers for Kevin Kolb (who can’t be moved until a new CBA is in place), in whom many teams could have interest. But even if the Eagles don’t plan to trade Kolb, it makes sense to place the franchise tag on Vick; he had a fantastic season, but he’s injury prone and started to revert back to some of his troubling old tendencies from his Atlanta days. The Eagles likely want to see more development from him before committing a long-term extension.
Flacco angry about Zorn firing… We’ve heard a lot of reasons why QB coach Jim Zorn was fired in Baltimore – incompatibility with his players among them – but don’t tell any of them to QB Joe Flacco. According to the Carroll County Times, Flacco is, frankly, pissed off about the release of his position coach, saying it feels like he’s “being attacked” personally. Flacco is angry that his input was not given more weight in the decision, especially since he quarterbacked the team to 13 wins and a near upset of Pittsburgh on the road in the AFC divisional round. But coach John Harbaugh insisted he is confident in offensive coordinator Cam Cameron’s ability to coach up Flacco and the other QBs, as well.
Titans still plan to get rid of Young… Despite the separation between the Titan organization and coach Jeff Fisher, one of QB Vince Young’s biggest critics, the Titans still plan to trade or release Young, something they decided to do earlier this month. Although the Titans likely won’t get much, if anything, for Young in a trade, the important thing is that will be a fresh start for whoever assumes the reins in Tennessee. As of now, offensive line coach Mike Munchak appears to be the favorite for the gig. Remember that veteran QB Kerry Collins is a free agent, as well. And heck, if you want further anecdotal evidence that Young is gone, check out this image posted on Twitter of the team removing a Young mural from outside LP Field.
Harbaugh talks up Smith… The 49ers’ new coach is already saying the right things in the press. Jim Harbaugh said over the weekend that he had been “studying” maligned QB Alex Smith on tape, and that he believes Alex Smith can be a winning quarterback. Obviously, the 49ers have been pegged as one of the teams most needing a change at QB this off-season, but Harbaugh is leaving his team’s options open, and if that means building up Smith’s trade value should the team go in that route, so be it.
Locker receives mixed reviews… Erstwhile top 2011 NFL Draft QB prospect Jake Locker didn’t impressive everyone at this weekend’s Senior Bowl, including our own Adam Caplan. Instead, Caplan was most impressed with big and mobile Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick, who may actually have done enough to boost his stock into the late first round.
- The Browns reportedly will hire Miami (Fl.) offensive coordinator Mark Whipple to be their QB coach. What’s interesting about the move is that the Browns might not hire an offensive coordinator with Whipple and head coach Pat Shurmur both coming from offensive backgrounds. The two coaches worked together in Philadelphia as recently as 2008.
- Redskin CB DeAngelo Hall was named MVP of the Pro Bowl, which the NFC won 55-41. Yawn.
