Cosell’s Coaching Tape: Week Eight 11/3/09 Notes

SAINTS OFFENSE V. FALCONS DEFENSE

Falcons opened the game in their nickel package with Jackson the third corner aligned as the “Sam” LB against the Saints “12” personnel package and “I” formation with TE Thomas as FB: Bell 5 yds
Thomas a tough inside runner with more power and physicality than his size would indicate; Also has good lateral agility and elusiveness, which was in evidence on 22 yd TD
Saints first TD drive was 10 plays + 80 yards: On each of the 10 plays, they aligned in a different formation – Saints a multiple and multi-dimensional offense
Biermann fumble recovery TD resulted from S DeCoud blitzing; The reason DeCoud waited was he had TE Thomas, aligned in the backfield, in man coverage in the Falcons “man free” scheme – DeCoud saw Thomas initially stay in to pass protect and then attacked Brees, Brees did not account for DeCoud as a blitzer
Hill played a lot of snaps at LCB for the [...]

Cosell’s Coaching Tape: Week Eight 11/2/09 Notes

RAVENS OFFENSE V. BRONCOS DEFENSE

The no huddle was a significant feature of the Ravens offensive game plan, but they still substituted based on down and distance, which then allowed the Broncos to match up from a personnel standpoint
Broncos do a lot with Dumervil; They moved him around the defense not only from side to side, but he also aligned at times at MLB in the nickel package
Ravens base offensive personnel in their “21” package had Rice as the feature back and McClain as the FB
In the 3 step and 5 step drop pass game, plus shotgun in which the ball was designed to come out quickly, the Ravens had LT Gaither block Dumervil one-on-one – That matchup favored the Ravens all game
Rookie CB Smith was the Broncos nickel corner, aligned inside over the slot; Williams also played nickel corner, and he was targeted by the Ravens on Washington’s 3rd + 5 catch in the third quarter
The no huddle was effective for [...]

Week Eight Reaches

Note: Players are in no particular order.

Quarterback

David Garrard at Tennessee – While Titan starting CB Cortland Finnegan may be
playing this week, starting CB Nick Harper (forearm) won’t be. The matchup is
still solid and they the Titan secondary was healthy, they were still
struggling.

Matthew Stafford vs. St. Louis – Stafford hasn’t played in a while, so there’s
some risk with him and he may not have starting WR Calvin Johnson. But if he
does, Stafford could do quite well against a suspect Ram secondary.

Marc Bulger at Detroit – The Lion secondary is one of the weakest in the NFL and
if you’re looking for a one-week reach that has a good matchup, Bulger would fit
that role.

Running Back

Shonn Greene vs. Miami – He’s going to get probably 8-10 carries in this game
and even more if the game is a blowout. Greene is worth a shot if you’re
struggling with bye week issues as your flex player.

Darren Sproles vs. Oakland – Talk about a big play possibility against a bad
defense run defense staring him in the face. Look for Sproles to have a big run
or two in this game, especially in the second half when the game is out of hand.

Mike Bell vs. Atlanta [...]

Here are the top stories I will be following in Week Nine of the NFL. Jacksonville (1-7) at Cincinnati (4-2) Can Denard Robinson continue to produce behind a bad OL?
