Think in terms of the mean

In junior high, I remember learning that the mean was simply the mathematical average. In the world of fantasy baseball, the mean is the concept that should allow you to sleep easy at night when David Ortiz is on your team and hitting well under .100. If Ortiz hits .300 for the season, you should be getting a .330 hitter from May through September.

Unless a player is going into serious decline or is in the infancy of a career, you can generally assume that most players will catch up to their career norms after a slow start. By the same token, a player that is absoulutely on fire for the first month will see a market correction over the course of a season.

Panic is often the emotion that many fantasy players demonstrate when their players are crawling out of the gate. Here is what I suggest for fantasy owners:

1) If your players are slumping, try to get a bench player to step in for the short term, then as soon as your player starts to heat up, get him right back in the lineup and let the good times roll!

2) If your opponents have slumping players, try to make a reasonable trade [...]

  • The latest projections August 30, 2015
Every year on this very day I am faced with the dilemma of having rankings that, despite being less than 2 days old, feel a little stale because of all the action in the critical third preseason game. The problem is it takes forever to update projections, comments, create the PDFs, create the excel files, and update all the apps. It cannot be done over the w […]

  • 8/17 USA Today mock draft August 19, 2015
I did an expert mock draft for USA Today and their special fantasy preview publication that will hit newsstands next week. I admittedly didn’t focus on the just the draft (I was working on several things at the time) and I simply queued up a bunch of players I liked. It wasn’t efficient at all, and I only like the squad (not love), but for what it’s worth th […]

  • 12-team PPR IDP Mock Draft results June 4, 2015
I have been buried since the NFL draft doing our post-draft work, 2015 projections, and more, so I didn’t get a chance to post a draft I participated in for most of May (slow draft). It’s for Athlon Sports’ fantasy magazine, so I can’t publish the entire draft. But here’s my team. This league stars 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 Flex, 1 TE, 1 PK, 1 DT, 1 DL, 1 LB, 1 […]
